Hi, name is Rob. first post in the forum.
I have read all rules and run all programs set up exactly how I am supposed to, and rebooted prior to posting.

I was having a problem with IE making my homepage about:blank and sending me to fake spyware protection sites.

when i got down to step 3 and trying to windows update it sent me to that same page.

i also had a little red circle in my taskbar that was for psguard and a little yellow flashing triangle both with "!" iside them.

after using all programs it appears to have fixed the homepage problem for now.

Psguard has reinstalled itself on my computer after restart. its seems it will not go away without a fight. The red circle is gone but the yellow triangle has just popped back up. placed a shortcut on my desktop for "psguard spyware remover" and put its folder filled up with goodies right back in my program files directory after ad-aware dumped it an hour ago.

after running all programs and the reboot i tried going to windows update again. I can get to the page now but it is sending me into a loop where it says "files required to use windows update are no longer registered or installed on you computer. to contine:" i click "register or reinstall files for me now"
it acts like it is downloading and instaling, but just sends me back to the same screen.

EDIT: 5 minutes after posting this i ran ad-aware again. it found the psguard, its folder and got rid of it. as soon as i closed the ad aware program...about 30 seconds past and psguard installed itself right back on my computer again.

Please try not to do any more "cleaning up" once you have posted your HijackThis log. Otherwise, there might be some new entries that are added, or old ones that are deleted after you posted the HijackThis log. You should have ran all those scans prior to giving us your HijackThis log

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall Paltalk via the Add/Remove panel and delete the folder if it's found -> C:\Paltalk\

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

safemode progress:
1. hijackthis items checked and removed
2. During the smitrem.exe process wininet.dll was found corrupt and replaced.
3. Adaware found psguard again and got rid of it
4. Ewido didn't find anything
5. Looked in controlpanel>display>desktop>customize desktop>web. there was no security info.
6. Panda found what look to be backups of files that the highjackthis program made and thats all. (i censored a folder name that i made for the youngins' on the board)

Yeah, I saw that earlier. Can't help but notice the folder name you created for HijackThis

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

i ran cleanup prior to posting in the first place. It eliminated 2 whole gig's of pure crap.
Thanks for all the help. Im so glad my problem didn't turn into one of those other 20 reply threads!!! awesome job.

I tried to go back and run windows update and still get stuck in the loop of being told i have to register, clicking the button, registering, and getting sent back to where i started.

I would really like to get SP2 and all the security updates it has in it.

any ideas on that problem??
