Windows 2000 Pro machine.
I have run adaware, hijackthis, and trend micro online scanner. Trend Micro says it is a troj dloader but can not clean it. The msdns.exe file is in C:\winnt\Microsoft .NET there are also sndsm.ini, sndsm.bak and sndsm.tmp files. I have removed msdns.exe from run under hklm and hkcu but and the started in safe mode with command prompt and deleted the above files. However, starting up normal brings them back.
The msdns.exe runs to the top of taskmanager taking up 100mb of memory

Trend Micro also found the following:
C:\winnt\AppPatch\antiwin.exe
C:\winnt\AppPatch\utilav.exe
C:\winnt\Microsoft .NET\abrwms.exe
C:\winnt\MSAgent\chars\dvdacc.exe
C:\winnt\ServicePack Files\ftpvb.exe
C:\winnt\system32\minst.exe
C:\winnt\tasks\dnsreg.exe

For the moment I have gotten rid of everything, but msdns.exe. However, it looks like it might be something that goes out and downloads other things.

Thanks for the time and effort to help me. Oh and by the way we run the corporate edition of Computer Associates E-trust antivirus which is up to date - any thoughts on why this has no reports.

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I have fixed the problem. -->
Booted into safe mode and deleted the file sndsm.dat and related registry entries, deleted registry entries for msdns and booted normally. Delted msdns and related files. Rebooted. Ran highjackthis and adaware. System is operating normally.

Thanks.
