Hi,
Well it seems that through my numerous downloads i happend to get a virus(not too surprised). Now this thing has been making me so ** pissed off, slowing up my computer so that a snail with a 10 pound weight behind it could beat it in a race. I have many Anti-virus scanners etc softwares(Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Spy Sweeper, Norton Antivirus 2004), i also have a firewall(Norton internet security). Now only Ad-Aware seems to find this problem but it keeps showing up after i delete it time and time again. Backdoor.Prorat.16 (i have also seen backdoor.prorat.19 show up on a free online scan i did) has to be one of the most annoying trojans out there. It has infected my services.exe file i believe and with the files reginv.dll and winkey.dll. Task manager shows services.exe taking about 15-20% cpu usage now. I cannot end the process b/c it is a critical process and i cannot delete the .dll's b/c they are in use....great now what i think. Tried renaming them, booting in safe mode, i have lost count on how many things i have tried. The files keep showing up after reboot EXCEPT when i reboot in safe mode with cmd prompt. 3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')


DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

1. Always have System Restore "Enabled" unless I ask you to do otherwise. That is our safety net.

2. Malicious .DLL file(s) has/have disrupted the LSP chain on your computer. This can be seen by the (010) entry(ies) in your HJT log. We must fix this problem as a priority.

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP.

2. Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

3. Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

4. Close all windows except LSPfix

5. Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

6. Put a check mark in the box “I know what I am doing”

7. Click ‘Finish’

7. REBOOT to complete the task.

8. Now RUN HJT, click Scan and POST a new log file in this thread using “Add Reply”.

1. First we must disable SpySweeper as it has a tendancy to interfere with our fix.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notification

2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.

Quick question, isn't services.exe like a critical windows process, or does the trojan just name it that to confuse people like me.

I figured that services.exe wasnt what i thought b/c the file was created August 02, 2005. So i deleted the stuff from HJT, rebooted in safe mode, then ran into some problems. I was able to delete fservice.exe and svchosttwb.dll wasn't in the file so maybe it was already deleted, but the problem was with services.exe. I tried to delete it but it said the file was in use by another person or program, and i could not kill the services.exe process in task manager b/c it said it was a critical process. Anyways here is a new HJT log.

1. In XP, when "services" is located anywhere but in the system32 folder, it is suspect. When in doubt about a file, just click on its properties to determine if it was issued by Microsoft.

2. The second problem you had, I expected because it is part of the porat trojan but I said let's give it a shot anyway.

The trojan has backdoor functionality and includes a keylogger. It is invisable from the Task Manager and employs counter-removal tricks so that it's difficult to terminate the Trojan process. Furthermore the Trojan monitors the registry entries it adds so they're restored immediately if changed.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad because we will be working out of Safe Mode. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step 1

A. Download Dellater.zip from here and unzip it to your System32 folder (C:\Windows\System32\).

B Download Windows-XP-Prefetch-Clean-And-Control.exe from here.


Step 2

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

• Run the above prefetch program to purge the prefetch folder.
• You will get the "first time" pop-up. Click OK.
• Select either the Recommended or Default option radio button
• Click the "Set Prefetch Parameters" tab.
• Click the "Clean Prefetch Folder Now" tab.

Step 3

• Go to Start |Run and copy/paste:
  
  Dellater.exe c:\windows\system32\fservice.exe <--Note the space between .exe and C:\
  
  
• You should get a pop-up:
  
  "File Marked for Deletion After Reboot
  c:\windows\system32\fservice.exe"
  
  
• Do the same for each of these files:
  
  Dellater.exe c:\windows\system\sservice.exe
  Dellater.exe c:\windows\system32\wininv.dll
  Dellater.exe c:\windows\system32\winkey.dll
  Dellater.exe c:\windows\winlogon.exe

Step 4

• Reboot into Safe Mode again
  
  Don't worry about the pop-up message that it can't find fservice.exe, you'll be fixing that in a minute.
  
  
• The above files should be gone and not recreated by the trojan. Note that winlogon.exe WILL exist in directories besides C:\windows. The winlogon in C:\windows was a trojan. The other winlogon.exe's are legitimate.
  
  
• Run HijackThis again and place a check before the following entry. Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS/BROWSERS and click Fix Checked:
  
  F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe

Step 5

• Open Notepad, (Start | Run, type in Notepad)
• Copy ALL the bold text below to notepad. (In clusing the word REGEDIT4)
• Click File | Save As
• Change the Save as type to *All Files*
• Save it to your desktop as fix.reg

• Double-click Fix.reg and confirm you wish to add the contents to the registry when prompted.

Step 6

• Reboot into normal Windows mode.
  
  (Windows will probably take a bit longer to load due to the prefetch folder repopulating but should speed up on the next reboot or two).
  
  
• Run hijackthis again to check the F2 entry has now gone.
  
  
• Check the registry to be sure the explorer key is not back again under the policies key.
  
  
• Click Start | Run and type regedit and press Enter.
  
  
• Navigate to the following key:
  
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies
  
  
  There should be no 'explorer' subkey present.
  
  
  
• Check your system to make sure that above deleted files are no longer in
  existence anywhere (except winlogon.exe but there should be no winlogon.exe in c:\windows).

Step 7

Post a fresh HijackThis log.

You don't see that fix very often. It is not that common as far as infections go.

All seems to be working well, services.exe is no longer taking 15-20% cpu usage, infact it stays at 0% most of the time so it seems that it worked! Thanks alot for helping, so here' the OK for the final steps.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
