I need help getting rid of Aurora popups. I tried following some of the instructions on previous posts, (ran nail.exe and ewido) which worked for a while, but then when I tried to update Windows security patches, it came back. I also get a "status unknown" message for virus protection on the Windows security alerts, even though I have Norton antivirus installed and running. You guys must be getting sick of this by now, but I really need your help! Thanks,

Sandy.

Hi skanderson,

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please Update Ewido if you haven't already done so :tazz:

Please download Nailfix from Here
please do NOT run it yet.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on
Nailfix.exe on your desktop. Click next, then finished. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

5. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

6. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

7. Open HiJack and do a scan.

8. Put a Check next to the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {00F1D395-4744-40f0-A611-980F61AE2C59} - C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll (file missing)

I think that did the trick! Everything seems to be working OK. The one thing that still bugs me is that I get the windows security message saying that my antivirus status is "unknown" even though I have Symantec Antivirus running. The Active Scan showed some stuff . Is there anything else I should/can do? If not, thanks for your help I really appreciate it. That Aurora thing was driving me nuts!

Ok this is strange. I deleted the folders that you asked. But the files (except Gator) weren't there. Then I ran Active Scan again and it shows them as being infected files on my computer. Also it shows Aurora as being there, which I don't think it did before, but I am not experiencing any popups. Here are my Active Scan and Hijack this logs.

OK. Looks like we're getting there-- only one item left in Active Scan -- Aurora! On the good news side, still no problem with popups. Here's the active scan and hijack this logs: Since my last log, I've updated for new windows security patches.

go to http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Scroll down to

Registry Search Tool
Search the Windows Registry for input string and display results (easier than repeatedly hitting the F3 key in RegEdit).

Script revised 13 Dec 2001 to work with Windows XP and Windows 2000.

And download this script :tazz:

Open the RegSearch folder and double click RegSearch.vbs. Allow it to run.

enter aurora then hit "ok"

RegSearch will "disappear" but it is actually searching the registry for that entry.

Copy and paste what it finds into a Notepad file.

OK. Here it is:

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-670770235-516276246-1282138258-1006\Software\aurora]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

and that should do it ;)

This is frustrating. I got rid of the aurora entry, but now I have a new one - delfinmedia. (my son was using the computer yesterday -- :tazz: ) Attached is the Active Scan Report and hijack this. In the meantime I ran Spybot, Adaware, and Edwido. Then Active Scan. Since the issue again seems to be the Windows registry, I tried to use RegSrch, but it returned no instances for "delfinmedia". Now what?

Open the RegSearch folder and double click RegSearch.vbs. Allow it to run.

enter delfinmedia then hit "ok"

RegSearch will "disappear" but it is actually searching the registry for that entry.

Copy and paste what it finds into a Notepad file.

I get a popup box that says, "Search completed in 38 seconds. No instances of "delfinmedia" found." I can't copy it, all I can do is click on OK
