Hi Gayle and welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0715] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe"/BEFOREINSTALL
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.morwillsearch.com
O16 - DPF: {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B} -
O20 - Winlogon Notify: URL - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nrtapi.dll

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\ - tell me if you have problems finding or deleting this folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nrtapi.dll

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Give me this log also:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi - and THANK YOU for such a quick reply - I know there are a lot of us out here with malfunctioning computers and we really appreciate your help!!!

I already had CWShredder - had run it a few times and it always came up with the same message - nothing was present EXCEPT 'VX2.Look2Me' and it said that it was REMOVED. However, next time I ran CWShredder, it said the same thing - didn't seem to make a difference. I did erase my previous copy, downloaded from your link and ran it - same result. I did a print_screen of its results if you want to see it.

However, that is not why I am posting right now!

I cannot boot into Safe Mode. I am able to get to the Boot choices screen and have three choices for Safe - Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Network Connection and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. But, whenever I select one (started first with Safe Mode), I am taken to another screen where it asks me to choose my Windows software. ONLY choice is Win XP Professional - BUT my software is Win XP Home. So, I choose the only choice and then this screen goes blank and I get lots of messages re: about Windows not able to boot into Safe Mode at this time because I was not shut down properly or restarting. Note: the first time I tried to boot into Safe, was during a Restart - but have since booted normally, done a hard shutdown and then a push the button startup - same error messages.

Any idea how I can try to get to Safe Mode?

BTW - Thanks for listening - if you need the details of the messages, let me know and I'll try to boot into Safe Mode again and write them down in detail - they go by so fast that I might not get them all, but will try...

Hi, greyknight17 -

I tried booting to Safe Mode again and got the specific messages - thought they might help you figure out what is happening on my PC.

When I choose Safe Mode (after doing the F8 thing), I get another screen that asks me to 'please select the operating system to start'. The only choice is Windows xp Professional --- but I have Win xp Home...

When I press Enter to select my only option (wrong OS), screen goes blank and then comes up with error messages that whiz by - looks like 2-3 pages full - the final 5 are:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\Mup.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\alim1541.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\amdcgp.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.sys

I am then taken to a page that begins with "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this....continues for 2 more paragraphs and then gives me the Safe Mode options again.

The only way to get past this screen is to go to 'Start Windows Normally'

So that is where I currently am sitting...

FYI - EVERY time I open a browser window I get the opt-in window for Winfixer 2005 Install, I click on Cancel and then get their full-screen window which I immediately Close.

Should I continue with any of your others fixes - or wait until I can get to Safe Mode? to do the HijackThis fixes?

THANKS!!!

Hi Gayle, no problem. Run these in Normal Mode since we have no choice now :tazz:

When you finish up the fixes, post the new HijackThis log and also give me the L2MFix log.

OK, here goes - nothing seems to have changed (still getting winfixer 2005 opt-ins, popups from loadingwebsite.com and spontaneous rebooting), but here are the details about what happened.

I ran HijackThis in normal windows mode - was able to check off everything EXCEPT the last one 020 - Winlogon Notify: URL - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nrtapi.dll. HOWEVER, there was a 020 - the file name was omesvr.dll. I wasn't sure if I should have, but I checked it so it would be 'fixed'. Completed the rest of the HijackThis instructions.

Went to Windows Explorer (with all hidden files showing) and tried to delete the two folders/files you suggested. I could NOT find the CONFLICT.9 folder. BTW, I recognize that long string as the one that comes up before Winfixer 2005 opens...ugh!

I WAS able to delete the nrtapi.dll file and also emptied the recycle bin before rebooting. FYI, was NOT able to delete the omesvr.dll one - windows said it was 'in use...'

Then, tried to shut down PC - it would not shutdown - not by clicking start, turn off computer nor by ctrl-alt-del, shutdown. Eventually, shut down by holding in power button until it shut down.

Had previously downloaded L2MFix, so when I turned PC back on, ran it for its log and also did another HijackThis log...here they are:

l2mfix log:

Thanks for your help - I am determined to beat this bugger!!!!!

Gayle

P.S. - I have support available from eMachines - should I call them to see about the inability to run in Safe Mode? I am willing to do that if you think that might be what I need to do in order to get these fixes to work...

Take care...

We didn't do any fixing yet, so I wouldn't expect any changes.

OK, let's begin the fix now that the infection you have is confirmed by the logs here :tazz:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hi, greyknight -

thanks for your reply - I didn't realize that we hadn't fixed anything yet - sorry...

So, I ran the l2mfix.bat and chose #2 - here is its log:

No need to apologize :tazz: I just needed a look at the scan log before we jump ahead and do the fixes. Don't want to waste time fixing it if there was nothing wrong there ;) But it's bad so we fixed it in this case.

I want you to run L2MFix again, but choose option #4 this time to fix some registry entries there.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run CWShredder. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0715] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe"/BEFOREINSTALL
O16 - DPF: {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B} -

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

rmdir /q "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\"
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi, greyknight -

3 quick questions...

1. Does the 'click on I agree...' paragraph pertain to the L2MFix or CWShredder?
2. Where do I save the notepad file "delete.bat" - desktop or a folder?
3. Can the L2Mfix be done in normal mode? (my PC won't boot into safe mode and the eMachines tech says only way to fix that is to re-install Windows - I am not willing to do that without some conversation with someone other than him first...)

THANKS!!!

1. Aahhh :tazz: That's what happens when I rush. I was working on too many of these ;) It's for CWShredder, I edited my reply.

2. You may save it on the desktop. Doesn't really matter. It will delete itself once you run it.

3. Yes, you may run L2MFix in Normal Mode.

OK, greyknight -

I ran L2MFix, chose #4 and it gave me a log - I saved it in case you wish to see it.

FYI, when I ran CWShredder, there were NO Problems - Yippee! ;)

I did the Fix Checked on all 5 options, finished the HijackThis and then did the remove directory batch file.

So, here is the latest HijackThis log file.

BTW, since the first L2MFix, #2, I have not seen the Winfixer 2005 or any of the popups - and the computer seems to be moving faster - that is a good sign, right?

When we are done with this process, can we discuss what I should be doing to protect my computer? I have been using Zone Alarm Pro, version 6 (firewall and anti-virus); Ad Aware SE Plus (purchased it) and Spybot S&D (free version). I also have Windows on auto-update/install. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'll wait to hear from you...

Yes, it's a good sign. Sure, let me take a quick look at that L2MFix log you saved. I'm sure it's ok now.

We just have one more problem here. We have to take care of that first.

Let's try this in Normal Mode:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0715] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe"/BEFOREINSTALL
O16 - DPF: {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B} -

Go to Start->Run and type in cmd and hit OK. Then type in each of the following lines (hit Enter after each line):

rmdir /s "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\"
exit

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi, greyknight...

Did what you asked and log is below - but it doesn't look any different to me...the five things you asked me to fix are all still there - ugh :tazz:

Also ran the rmdir tasks - FYI, I changed the directory to C:\ - it came up in documents & settings, etc. dir; and also answered 'Y' when it asked after pressing Enter on the first line - I am assuming those were correct...if not, please let me know...

THANKS for your reply - I had just logged on to let you know that it had been over 24 hours since I had seen Winfixer or the rest of those popups and to say 'thank you', but then saw your reply, so went ahead to do the fixes you suggested...

Gayle

Also ran the rmdir tasks - FYI, I changed the directory to C:\ - it came up in documents & settings, etc. dir; and also answered 'Y' when it asked after pressing Enter on the first line - I am assuming those were correct...if not, please let me know...

It should be in c:\windows\downloaded program files\ though. Did you delete that CONFLICT folder from there? If yes, then it's correct. But if not, we'll try again. Put the quotes around the full path "c:\......CONFLICT.9\"

OK, I want you to boot into Safe Mode to do this again. But make SURE that Ad-watch is turned OFF now. It shouldn't be running, but double check. Or go into Ad-watch settings and see how you can disable the real time protection since it may be running.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0715] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe"/BEFOREINSTALL
O16 - DPF: {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B} -

Go to Start->Run and type in cmd and hit OK. Then type in each of the following lines (hit Enter after each line):

rmdir /s "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.9\"
exit

Go into C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ and see if you can find and delete {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B}.

Restart. I want you to set a homepage for Internet Explorer like Google.com. I'm sure the first 3 entries are ok in HijackThis. It's the other 2 that are the problem.

Post a new HijackThis log.
