1. I ran through all the steps in your latest post - good call on the Ad-Watch! When I turned it off, the HijackThis Fix This process actually deleted all 5 items. (just a reminder - I cannot boot in Safe Mode - problem with my OS - when we decide we have gone as far as possible with my fixes, I am going to post a request for help in getting to Safe Mode in the Win xp forum...)

2. Also did the DOS program - it did NOT find the folder, so did not delete it - I copied what it said to a notepad file so here it is:

I Could not find {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B} anywhere on C: - I did a full file search (including hidden files & folders) FYI, I did a print screen of the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files directory - I will attach that below - it was copied to and saved in Word 2002.  printscreen_downloaded_program_files.doc   179KB   14 downloads

4. Our home page in IE is already set for google.com - that actually has never changed throughout this process with WinFixer and popups - IE started on the google homepage and then started giving me lots of other windows to mess with...

5. Almost last, but not least, here is the latest HijackThis log - 4 of the 5 seemed to stay gone by not letting Ad-Watch come back on. However, when I turned Ad-Watch back on, it asked me if I wanted to let them stay deleted - when I said allow (to let them be deleted) THEY STAYED GONE. I rebooted again, just to be sure and ran another HijackThis. As you can see - the 016 line is still there, but NOT THE 04 line - YIPEE!!! Here is that log:

It just goes to show that even when we think we have done all we can to be safe - something can still sneak through. I do not have any sympathy for those who create these things - I hope that someday they can be caught and get their just punishment!

Hi Gayle, hopefully this will get rid of it once and for all

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\ and delete {79C03BC5-6C55-4B5B-921F-C02B6F1ABD7B}

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Restart and run a HijackThis scan. Do you see that O16 entry anymore? If not:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Sorry I haven't been back in touch for a few days - been trying to catch up on all the lost computer time that I needed to prepare new courses for this fall (I am a college computer applications instructor - we just moved to 2003 and Elements 3.0 - getting lesson plans together...)

I tried your latest fix to delete the {79C03BC5-...} entry - and it did not work - Hijack This log is below. I also went through the permissions/advanced process and tried a second time - 016 entry was still there after I rebooted.

FYI, I have turned off the Ad-Watch so it isn't adding it back in after I delete it.

BTW - all seems to be running VERY SMOOTHLY with my PC right now (hope I didn't say that too loudly...), so if deleting this entry can be ignored for now, I am willing to consider my quest closed. Please let me know if you agree.

If not, then I will pursue with your instructions for another try at deleting it...

Hi Gayle, no problem. Take care of the higher priority things first

OK, I think I got it (hopefully ). Uninstall Ad-watch (or Ad-aware if they are linked together). Then restart and make sure the Ad-watch (or Ad-aware folder) is deleted. Then fix that O16 entry again in HijackThis. Close HijackThis. Next I want you to go into the registry again and try deleting that long number I listed previously in the same path.

Restart. Reinstall Ad-watch/Ad-aware. Run new HijackThis scan. ***crossing fingers here *** Is it back?
