thank you so much for the services that you provide.

I seem to always be at constant war with my laptop. Spyware, Popups, viruses - I have had all of them. I scan my computer at least 4 times a day with both AdAware and Microsoft AntiSpyware and also uninstall any unauthorized programs that may have landed on my computer. Those two programs usually seem to keep most of the maladies in check.

However, there is one that has been hacking at me lately - WinFixer. My Firefox browser doesn't seem to stop it and my AdAware and Micro AntiSpyware can't find where it is.

I have been reading some of the other threads and related to this very WinFixer problem and downloaded some of the other recommended anti-spyware/anti-malware programs out there.

On Edit: There is also an incidence where MSN search takes over the Google News Search. When I click Search News on Google, MSN opens up a new window and provides the same exact results as Google. Just because Microsoft can't compete with Google doesn't mean they have to force themselves in front of the user!

Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please run LQfix.bat. A black window should flash. When finished, restart your computer in normal mode.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. Your current versions are outdated. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. 4)I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client, as do AntiVir or avast!.

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate.

Thank you for all of your help.

It appears that I do not have any spyware/malware/virus related issues. However, I am having some difficulty installing the Windows updates.

My Windows update's settings are already set to automatically install any new Microsoft updates. However, there are two updates that are failing to install.

They are:
1. Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)

2. Update for Windows XP (KB898461)

So I went to the individual Microsoft websites and downloaded the setup files. Yet when I started running the setup files on both, and error screen appeared which said

Setup Error: Installation did not complete

Any help on sucessfully installing the setup files? Thanks.
