I can turn off the firewall and only then mysql runs and mysqladmin runs. When I try to touch anything in NIS program control NIS hangs. NIS hangs sometimes when I try to read the log files.

mysql is configed to talk to mysqld on the same machine (localhost) via the usual port (3306, I think) over tcp/ip. There are entries in NIS program control for mysqldemon and mysqladmin but NIS hangs when I hit the modify button.

mysql.exe ran just fine a few months ago even with the NIS firewall turned on, so I guess NIS broke between then and now. I can even imagine LiveUpdate broke it.

All the NIS log files say is that mysql.exe is preparing to access the internet.

Last week NIS decided apparently on its own to block all email. My ISP figured out it was my firewall so I added a rule to lock open ports 25 and 110 and then email ran fine.

When NIS hangs it will prevent shutdown of XP, I have to use the power switch. I guess the solution is reinstall of NIS but I'd rather know how I broke it so I don't have to do this every few months.

TIA
