My computer is haunted!

I was searching for disk cleanup-type software and stumbled on a what I think was a warez website, and my computer freaked and added about 50 shortcuts to my desktop. spybot and adaware did nothing, and I used the programs on your 'new users' page and luckily I gained access to ctrl+alt+delete and removed about 50-60 infected files from my computer, but every time I restart, I get a bunch of red Xs in the bottom right saying to install spysheriff and al that jazz and theres a blue warning type thing on my desktop background saying I'm being attacked by spyware.

I take pretty good care of my computer and keep it virus and spyware free and monitor the tasks alot and three new tasks apeared in my task manager processes: winstall, kernels32, vxh8jkdq5, and vxh8jkdq2. whenever I end these processes, one of the 4 Xs in the bottom right goes away.

Here's my hijack this log:

Welcome to GTG.

Hmm, let me get my bottle of holy water here :tazz: I'm sure we can un-demonize this computer ;)

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us4.hpwis.com/

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Uninstall Viewpoint and 180searchassistant via the Add/Remove panel.

Delete these if found:

c:\program files\180searchassistant\
C:\WINDOWS\vv4oXIp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pooedb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cgwtpy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TBLVDQITL.exe
C:\WINDOWS\BIOVPYF.exe
c:\WINDOWS\System32\zzb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sqnoovum.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
c:\WINDOWS\System32\zzb.exe
C:\winstall.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vxh8jkdq2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe - only delete it in the WINDOWS folder and no where else

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido log.

Thanks for the quick response!

Before I begin I have a question, I read that it was unwise to have two antivirus programs at once. When my computer became posessed, I ran AVG and got rid of all the infected files, than I uninstalled it and downloaded and ran Ewido and uninstalled it and downloaded and installed AVG again.

Is it safe to download and install ewido while I have AVG alreayd installed?

Alright, I did everything as instructed.

IE seems to be working now, that annoying thing on my desktop background is gone, and no more Xs in the bottom right.

since as long as I can remember the system32 folder used to poen itself on restart and it was annoying but that's gone now.

I have one problem though, I tried right clicking on my desktop to go to the display properties to change my desktop back but the top tabs are gone, if you don't know what I mean I can post a screen capture.

Edit: by going into display and changing my theme to XP and applying, the tab become visable again and I can alter them, but once I hit okay, I hit properties again and they are gone. Am I going to haveto just live with havoing to switch my theme back and forth?

Anywho, here are the logs:

You may install Ewido and AVG together. Ewido is said to be compatible with AVG and also a handful of other antivirus programs. So yes, you may keep those two :tazz:

Yes, I know what you are talking about. It's a side effect from the spysheriff/smitfraud infection.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say no:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Leisure\Anime sites.url
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\data1.dat
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\data2.dat
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\
C:\WINDOWS\INF\biini.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\conscorr.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\localNrd.inf
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\etc\hosts.bho
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ezStubi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\html.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ide21201.vxd
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NLNP!3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\osconfig.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\osmim.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sahagent1002.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\setup_incred_9.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vx.tll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winnet.ini

Check and fix this in HijackThis:

O23 - Service: svchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Restart and see if the Display Properties settings are back to normal now. If not, I want you to boot into Safe Mode again and run smitRem.exe. Boot back to normal mode and post that log here along with a new HijackThis log.

I turned off system restore, rebooted, turned it back on and ran kill box but I copy the files you listed to my clip board, and when I click file->paste from clipboard nothing happens. the box stays blank and I click the x and the bar turns yellow and tells me to enter text.

should I paste all the files via ctrl+v and click the x seperately instead?

and also when I tried getting rid of O23 - Service: svchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing) before in hijackthis, it doesn't go away and I click te check next to it and click 'info on selected item' this box comes up (attachment).

it sais it requires restart, but I've tried restarting and running hijackthis and getting rid of it about five times and it's not going away.

I booted in safemode and ran smitrem and booted back in safemode and got the HJT log like you said to do if It didn't work:

OK, for KillBox, did you acually copy the files in your computer? If so, don't do that :tazz: Sorry for not being more clear. I just want you to select those files I listed here in the forum in BOLD letters. Just select those lines and right click -> Copy. Go back to KillBox -> File -> Paste from Clipboard.

Can you change your background now?

See if you can get rid of that O23 SvcProc entry using these methods:

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Delete an NT service and type in SvcProc and hit OK.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for svchost.exe (moto) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Restart. If it comes back, try doing the above in Safe Mode.

Did it work?

alright, I followed instruction and O23 SvcProc is gone.

No I didn't copy the actual files, I highlighted thier names, ctrl+C copied, and tried selecting paste from clip board. That didn't work so I tried right-click copying and it isn't pasting.

and still no display properties.

Did you delete them though? If not, manually delete these:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Leisure\Anime sites.url
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\
C:\WINDOWS\INF\biini.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\conscorr.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\localNrd.inf
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\etc\hosts.bho
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ezStubi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\html.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ide21201.vxd
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NLNP!3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\osconfig.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\osmim.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sahagent1002.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\setup_incred_9.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vx.tll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winnet.ini

Try this:
Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Restart and see if the display properties are back.

If it's ok now, then:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I just want to make sure on this one. Can you go to the Display Properties at all (right click Desktop->Properties)? Or is the problem that you can't change the theme to XP style?

I can go to display properties but the problem is the tabs on the top are missing to change my resolution and and color options ect.
They are just not there and they become visable when I switch my theme to windows XP and back, but only until I close it.

Right click on this link and save it. Double click and choose Yes. Restart. Are all the tabs back now?

If still not, I want you to run another Panda scan and post that log here along with a new HijackThis log.

I ran that REG and no luck, all it did was change my display to XP style (it was on classic) and the tabs are still invisable.

Active scan found 2 spyware and a dialer:

Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\blank.mht
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\win.dat

Do you have more than one user account on this computer? If so, is it happening to all of them? If yes, I want you to run those two .reg files I asked you to get before and add them to the registry by double clicking on them. Make sure these account have administrative rights.

Another thing to check is to see if you can find a file called desktop.html (probably in c:\windows\ folder - if not, try a search). Delete that file if found. See if that fixes it.
