Nothing running, blank screen, Explorer not there?

When I start my computer nothing appears on my desktop. Ctrl + Alt + Del shows nothing running. Only options are to shut down. How do I get my explorer.exe back? I hope there is a way. PLEASE HELP me job depends on it.
