This compaq is a joke for a what a 2.8 celeron should be.
I'v run ad-aware, SB - S&S, and AVG 6.0 to clear the obvious, just wanting to make sure it's clean - which to be honest i doubt.

Also, i get a constant error regarding HPWirelessmgr, this is the major issue as i get an error for this fairly often after a slow startup. Seing as the startup and shutdown of the laptop is slow, it might be hardware. would like to be able to sort it without having to send it back to be fixed via insurance.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

• Automatically save log-file
• Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
• Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

• Scan Within Archives
• Scan Active Processes
• Scan Registry
• Deep Scan Registry
• Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
• Scan my Hosts file
• Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
• All of your hard drives

-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

• Include additional process information
• Include additional file information
• Include environment information
• Include additional object details

-> Click the Tweak button and select:

• Under the Scanning Engine:
  • Unload recognized processes during scanning
  • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
• Under the Cleaning Engine:
  • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

• Use Custom Scanning Options

-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

> Reboot your computer.

i got the newer version.
looking into it the HPwirelessmgr error i'm getting is down to Notebook utilities given by HP. can't uninstal it either because because of a different error! don't wanna cause problems for myself by shift+delete on the whole bloody lot

I'm about to go out the door but giving it a quick look, the log needs a little work.

On the slow start-up, go to start>run>type in msconfig and look at what you have on your start-up. It's the last tab. Go to answersthatwork.com and find what you have on the start-up. That might help if you get rid of some of the items. Make sure they aren't vital tasks

Make sure you clean out your temp. files and defrag your disc. Other than uninstalling programs you don't need - if it's still slow - it may be another issue.

Run Hijack This again. Check these.

hey hey! thanks for checking this out for me , really do apreciate it! done a few things and it looks clean to me. i got rid of all the hp stuff and that smees to have cured the slowness.
