I have run the steps as suggested pon your "Start Here" Page. I am still getting 7 occurances of the SmitFraud virus according to Spybot S&D which it cannot remove. The steps I have taken so far:

1. Ran clean up and removed all suggested files.
2. Ran Ad-aware and removed all detected Spyware.
3. Ran Spybot and cleaned the majority if the Spyware detected. Smitfraud-c is still being detected as being still on the system with 7 occurances. The application states it cannot clean the virus as the files are already loaded and request to restart scan upon reboot. The same thing happens on the reboot.
4. I ran the Ewido Security Suite as per instructions.
5. I ran the on line scan from Panda and Trend and cleaned up any infections found. The Panda scan was run a few days ago and found a few items, but the trend ran this evening found nothing.
6. I ran a complete scan with Norton with updates from today.
7. I am on SP1a right now and will hold off on SP2 until I am sure the virus is gone.
8. I ran the autoruns application to look at loaded programs. An entry for winlogin.exe had the same icon as the one in system bar. See below.I searched on the listed file name associated with the entry (msole32.exe). Norton's page has this listed as a trojan. When I try a scan with their latest files it detects nothing..

The screen background is no longer being locked out and has now returned my wallpaper. Before all the scans I was getting the advertisement stating my PC was infected and to click here to download a fix and the background selection was not an option. The red exclamation point is no longer displayed in the start up grouping, but the yellow flashing icon has returned along with an error message which preiodically asks me to dowload a fix for the 4 detected infections. When the yellow exclamation is clicked I am routed to the PS Guard download page. I also periodically receive a pop-up bubble stating my system is infected with spyware. The log file from Hijack this and the Ewido is below as per the "Start Here" instructions. Ay help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome ttjoseph to Geeks to Go!

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

***

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

***

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.

The program will now go to the main screen
[/list]You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

***

Update AdAware SE 1.06 to the latest definitions. Don't run it yet.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your computer.

***

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

***

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the report and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Thanks for the quick response and for helping me out. I ran through all the steps you outlined below. The HiJack log files was actually run last even though it is listed first. I do not have any of the icons in the system tray or popups normally associated with the SmitFraud HiJack. The Panda scan appears to have found one item it could not clean up. If you have any suggestions for this one please let me know. I ran spybot again and it still lists 7 entries that it can not clean without a reboot. It starts on reboot and still does not remove the items.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\dm.inf
Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

I see you are running the outdated 1.3 version of Spybot.
Remove this one using and download the latest version (1.4).

Open HijackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on
    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
  • Click on Delete this entry
  • Click "Yes"
Close HijackThis.

Reboot the computer.

Use one of these mirrors to download.

The things Spybot found have to do with part of your security. You should leave them.

Is the computer running ok now?
Can I post you some tips for the future and close the topic?

Sorry for the delay. The system with the problem is actually the neighbor’s laptop and it is hit and miss for getting time to work on it. Please go ahead and close the post I will run the remainder clean up suggestions when I can get the laptop. I would also appreciate any suggestions for future tips both for this system and some I can use as generic suggestions for people who ask me to assist in their PC rebuilds and clean ups. You help is greatly appreciated :tazz:

Ok, good luck then.

------------

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
