Hi, firstly thanks to you for all the help you've already given me in the "please read this before posting a HJT log" thread. :tazz: .

I have followed those instructions to the letter and some of the products used did pick up small amounts of Malware which were removed. I have now re-run all the tests again and a summary of results is shown below :

McAfee scan : clean
MS AntiSpware scan : clean
Ewido scan : Trojan.Agent.eo + Spyware.Cookie.Bluestreak & Spyware.Cookie.Yieldmanager : all cleaned
AdAware scan : 88 Reg Keys & 2 Reg Values. Malware.Psgaurd (90 objects). All removed.
Spybot S&D scan : Smitfraud-C. 6 entries. Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify/FirewallDisableNotify
CWShredder scan : clean
TrojanHunter scan : clean
Trend online scan : clean
Panda online scan : Scans for about 1 hour, finds 5 trojans but then closes without warning

Note that Spybot S&D still finds 6 entries related to Smitfraud-C. which it cannot remove because it says they are in use or in memory and it can remove then upon restart. However, when restarted it still cannot remove them. The entries are listed as 'Registry Change' and an example is :

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2468014635-347521023-2490318818-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\win-eto.com\@!=W=4

Note in task manager, I can see msole32.exe under my username which I believe is not a good thing.

Any help you can give me for the problems below is much appreciated!

My current symptoms are as follows :

1) System Tray : Yellow Triangle with Exclamation Mark

When clicked, yellow bubble appears :

Title : System Alert : Popups

Your PC is infected with popups adware (OHPE ver 4.12_23).
Click the icon to get all available anti popup software.

Clicking icon opens browswer windows at : www.psguard.com

Sometimes a PSGuard window appears (and psguard.exe is in the task manager)

2) System Tray : Yellow Triangle with Exclamation Mark

When clicked, yellow bubble appears :

Title : Security Alert

Clicking icon opens browswer windows at : www.adwaredelete.com

3) Popup up with Window Title : System Warning

Critical System Error!
Please read this message carefully.

You must improve your PC's security and system performance by deleting Spyware from your operating system.
Attention! Failure to delete spyware from your PC can result in damage of system resources and your personal files corruption.
Use special software to remove spyware and adware from your comptuer.
Click "OK" to get all available Anti Spyware Software

Buttons : OK Cancel

(when OK is clicked a web page is loaded briefly then disappears and then tries to download Install.exe which I of course cancel)

4) Pop up with Window Title : System Warning

5) McAfee Viruscan popup

The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell32.exe was infected by the Oleloa trojan and has been deleted to complete the Clean process. This has happened several times despite McAfee sayings its deleted the file.

6) PSGuard product occasionally launches and starts scanning

I enclose my HijackThis log below (I have logs saved from other scans if required) :

Hi infaddict and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Right click on the Microsoft/Giant AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it after the fix, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

8. click the Fix Checked box

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

12. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

13. Run the program CleanUp!

14. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

15. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hey Excal, thanks for the fast reply and very detailed instructions :( .

All instructions carried out and results as follows :

1) CWShredder = clean
2) smitRem ran successfully (copy of smitfiles.txt pasted below)
3) AdAware scan = 104 objects removed
4) Ewido scan = 1 trojan cleaned
5) Control Panel/Display/Desktop... "Security Info" was not present
6) Clean Up! successful
7) Panda ActiveScan ran for about 1 hour but then closed down again without warning. This has happened before and I mentioned it in my original post. Not sure if this is a problem.

The system appears to be running ok now. Haven't had a popup or other annoying thing for a couple of hours :tazz: . Only problem is that my XP now looks 'old school' like Win 98 with standard grey buttons & task bar etc. Any ideas how to restore the look and feel back to XP ;)

Thx again for the prompt reply.

Items removed as requested, fresh HJT log below. System seems to be running fine - only minor problem is that XP now looks like old style Win 98 with grey buttons etc. Hopefully this be rectified once we are happy with the Malware issues.

download a copy of luna.msstyles here:
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Thank you :tazz:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean ;)

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Hey Excal, just a quick follow up post on this. Machine is continuing to run fine with no popups etc.

I've followed your advice on prevention and today I have run some checkup scans. As reported in an earlier post, SpyBot S&D is still reporting 6 registry entries for Smitfraud-C which it cannot remove (because they are in use) and cannot remove on restart because of the same thing.

The entries are listed as 'Registry Change' and an example is :

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2468014635-347521023-2490318818-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\win-eto.com\@!=W=4

Are these entries bad or can they be ignored? Do I need to reset my internet zones? Any advice much appreciated... updated HJT log below :

It would be instersting to see whats in your trusted zones.

Go to start>controlpanel>security center>internet options>trusted sites...then click on sites. Let me know the list thats in there.

are all the registry entries the same in Spybot S&D?

Thanks,

:tazz:

Hey Excal, I don't seem to have anything in my 'Trusted Sites' list. The 'Web Sites:' box is empty and it gives me the option to add sites if I wish. I can post a screen shot if you wish.

OK, can you copy down the bad reg entries that SPyboy S&D are giving you please.

Try to do an activescan as it will show me bad Reg entries.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

thanks,

:tazz:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

reboot into normal mode and run spybot again.

Please post the smitfiles.txt

Thanks,

Excal

Excal, sorry for the delay in replying... RL always gets in the way :tazz:

Ok, I re-did the smitrem stuff and it didn't remove the fact that SpyBot still reported those 6 reg entries. I'm afraid I don't have the log file with me cos I'm at work.

However, an update was available to SpyBot which I downloaded. After this update, those 6 entries were no longer reported. I'm guessing these were either false positives or something else that has been removed from latest defs.

Machine is still running file and all scans are now clear, so great job and thanks :) . I guess this thread can be closed now.

P.S. I made a small donation the other day in appreciation.
