I am really not computer savvy, but I know there are some things wrong with my computer. A program, Winfixer, has repeatedly installed itself in my computer. I have tried to delete, to no avail. It happens nearly every time I sign in to my computer, along with prompts to run a Nail file, though I cannot remember the exact name. Then I get windows telling me there are problems with rundll. After I finally get online, I get tons of pop ups, some of which you can't even X out without ctrl/alt/delete, which then closes all my browser windows. Sometimes there will be an aurora pop up that disappears as fast as it appears.

I downloaded spybot, ad aware, and ewido. They all found lots of things, but not the stuff that is causing major problems. It seems to recreate itself. I have a cable modem, which came with a security suite. I am thinking I need more protection, now.

I know all these things came from Kazaa. My sister downloaded it to my computer and since then it has been in terrible shape. I deleted it, but that didn't help. I hope I did this log correctly. Please help if you can. I want my computer back. And I hope you don't fault me for being slow with computer lingo, I may not know everything it is you are talking about. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. Your log looks quite bad at the moment. Let's first get rid of leftovers of Kazaa..

First, can you download;
LSPfix

Get it ready to be used IF NECESSARY but do NOT run it yet. It is only if your internet connection would go broken.

Download KazaaBegone.zip.

Before running the program, go to -> Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following entries if present;
P2P Networking
SaveNow
WhenUShop
My Search Bar
Peer Points Manager
NOTE; When you're removing, if it asks you if you want to uninstall Altnet too, hit YES.

Download CleanUp!

Run the CleanUp! installer and get the program ready to be used but don't run it yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup

Launch Ad-Aware SE and click on the gear to access the Configuration menu. Please make sure that this setting is applied;

Click on Tweak => Cleaning engine => UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
Click "Finish". Run a Full System Scan, removing anything it finds.

Now run CleanUp! and reboot.

Once rebooted;

Launch KaZaaBegone.exe. Click on "Search for installed componerts only" and hit GO. You will see a list leftover objects. Click "Search & destroy all installed components" and hit GO. The program will remove all installed components, it should inform that uninstalled succesfully. Click "Ok", and exit.

When finished,

I need you to create folder called C:\HJT.
When you have created the new folder, please move HiJackThis.exe to that folder from the current location you have it. Then please delete the zip.file/any other files you have left from the temporary location. This is important so that HiJackThis can create backups if necessary. Empty your recycle bin.
Run a new scan with HiJackThis and post a fresh log.

In the event that you lose Internet access after running KazaaBegone, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

How do I create back ups for my hard drive? Clean Up suggested that I do that before I run that program...

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp.

It will only empty your recycle bins, cookies (well, that's just optional but recommended to remove anyway). It will also do this for all the accounts on your PC.

You don't need backups unless you have stored good stuff on your Temporary Internet folders or anything..

I'm afraid HiJackThis might be deleted with CleanUp unless you moved it to it's permanent folder first.

OK let's start from the top. I deleted those programs the other day (p2p and such) I knew they were parts of Kazaa, and I was trying to fix things myself. So those are gone.

I ran ad aware, and clean up. Freed up 1.1GB. I thought that scan was never going to finish

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

First;

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a free version of the program.

• Install Ewido Security Suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!" Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  
• You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
• Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Download dsrfix.zip
Save it to your desktop.

• Unzip dsrfix.zip and extract it to your desktop.
• This will create a new folder on your desktop named dsrfix.
• Do Not open that folder yet.

Please download APT and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

• Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for Gnhusv.exe.
• Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for C:\WINDOWS\Gnhusv.exe.
  Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
• In APT again, Select Gnhusv.exe and Click Kill3
  
• Then immediately delete C:\WINDOWS\Gnhusv.exe from your system32 folder.

Close APT.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• Clean anything it finds.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close Ewido.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Now open the folder dsrfix on your desktop.

• Double-Click on dsrfix.bat
• A window will pop up briefly then close, this is normal.

Enable show hidden files and folders:

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files - option.

Now using Windows Explorer find and remove the following folders/files and delete if present;

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp

• Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Delete Cookies
    This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
• Click OK
• Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
• When asked to reboot system select No
• Close CleanUp

Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log, as well as the ewido report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply.

As for the files you wanted me to find and delete, I could only locate one, and it said it was being used by someone/something and could not be deleted:

Please download the l2mfix from one of the locations below;

Save the file to your desktop and double-click l2mfix.exe

Click the Install - button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until I ask you to!


Note; if you recieve any error messages for CMD or Autoexec.bat>> select option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the site, click on the link that apply to your operating system!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double-click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
