Well, if everything's fine, it's clean then. ;)

I'll leave this thread open for - let's say couple of days - post back here couple days later and let me know if your system is still good.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My favourite)

Sounds good. I was just coming back to post a question about keeping my computer virus free! I really appreciate the advice. I will be sure to get most of those programs. Hopefully I won't have anymore problems in the near or distant future, but thanks for keeping the thread open just in case. Take care, and thanks again!

OK well I installed Spywareguard, Spywareblaster, MVPS Hosts, Google Toolbar, ZoneAlarm, and Anti-Vir. I even have Firefox now. My only question is, when you dl Anti-vir, should you have 2 icons on the desktop? I have two icons, both with the red box and white umbrella, yet one says Anti-Vir XP, and the other says avwinsfx. Is the second one a part of Anti-Vir XP? The reason I am suspicious is first because of the name, and secondly because when I click on it, it asks me if I want to run it, and that the publisher could not be verified. Am I being paranoid?

  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and paste the List from the notebook onto your post

Ok, firstly one thing I want to know. Is this program an Anti-virus software which protects your PC? Like an guard;

Freedom Security & Privacy

'Cause if it is, then you should only pick one anti-virus software you use. But of course, if this scanner is only that -- a scanner which you can use to scan your PC from time to time, then it's ok. But if it's like all the time in the background, you shouldn't use Antivir. Because two Anti-virus guards at the same time WILL cause conflicts.

Next, have you installed this software for your use or do you need it at-all;

PartyPoker

Third, you can uninstall these two programs if you want to, of course you can use the trials to the end if you want;
Spy Sweeper (I still recommend uninstalling SpySweeper since it is only couple of weeks trial, and your system is already clean. Also since you already have proper anti-malware protection, I think you're just wasting space from your PC.)

ewido security suite

Do you know what these are ?

HLPCCTR
HLPIndex
HLPPDOCK
HLPSFO

Freedom security suite came with my cable service. I am not using now. It obviously wasn't doing much... I am using the Anti-Vir now.

My husband uses Party Poker, but I think I'm going to remove it anyway.

I will certainly remove those 2 programs, Spy Sweeper & ewido security suite, since I don't need them anymore.

And I have no idea what these are:
HLPCCTR
HLPIndex
HLPPDOCK
HLPSFO
