I constantly get this error in dreamweaver when applying behaviors:

"Making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template or a translator."

Does anyone know how to resolve? I have been through Macromedia's docs and I do not have improperly nested tags.

Found at the following web site:

http://www.dreamweav...s.com/index.cfm

Erroneous Error Messages

Problem Description: When I update the template's associated pages, various error messages are displayed. Most often these take the form of "The changes entered would require changing a region that is locked...". This seems to be a more generic error message than we would like, and could reflect coding errors that have nothing to do with changing locked code. In fact, it appears that this message often reflects a deeper 'displeasure' with the template code itself.

Resolution(s):

1. Check that your template is syntactically correct by using the menu item Modify > Templates > Check Template Syntax. If all is well there, then chances are it is a library item or include that is causing the issue. Check those for issues.
2. You could have inadvertently added regions using the same name. Each template region must have a unique name.
3. Dreamweaver 4 and UltraDev 4 were famous for adding multiple doctitle editable regions, so using Code View verify that only one doctitle editable region is wrapping your <title> tag.

Good place to start, and a good book I might add.

Hopefully this helped.

Hi Fleming,

Thanks for the input. I had already checked all of the above befroe posting to no avail.

This error seems to be a common source of frustration for DW users.

The behaviors that you speak of, would they be reliant on any code being written to the header section? If so, this could be the issue, if the header is not set as an editable region. I did some research, and damned if I could find anything specific other than this. It appears even some of the support people at Macromedia didn't know how to solve the problem...and even if they did they werent being open about it. I saw one of the support people on Macromedias support forum tell someone experiencing the same issue to "use one of his complementary trouble tickets"...whatever that means...pass the buck until they can bilk you out of some money is how I read it.
Hope this helps, post back and let us know how it turns out.

I got this problem and found that removing my include file footer enabled me to write the code that i needed and then i re-inserted the include file. Don't if this is any help but i thought i should share the joy... :tazz:

All files are associated with a template, that means that by changing an element in a template will change evry single file associated with that template. If you want to change the file you have two options. 1) remove the template association by selecting Modify->Templates->Detach from your template name.dwt or 2) if you only want to update a specific attrbute select Modify->Templates->Make Attribute Editable. Good Luck.
