Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water...

Just went to do a Windows Update to make sure I had all the latest security patches. It lists about 12 patches that need to be installed (IE6 SP1, .NET SP1 security, etc.) They all download correctly (V6 Windows updater web site) but then all the installs fail. I sent email to Microsoft asking for help.

Anyone seen this problem? Now that the PC appears clean I want to make sure it has all the latest patches and continues to be updated.

Click HERE to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".

Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Restart in SAFE MODE and Run those files through Killbox once more to be sure nothing survived.

This time place a tick by any of these selections available

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Reboot in SAFE MODE.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

Your log looks ok, except for the C:\WINNT\system32\??xplore.exe it comes back. There also other entries that needs to be dealt with however we need to submit it first for analysis.

First to deal with that file. Reboot in safe mode, go to Windows explorer then be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Delete this file:
C:\WINNT\system32\??xplore.exe <-- be careful with the ?? file, do NOT be confused with the Explorer.exe

Now reboot to normal mode and go to this website:
http://www.thespykil...x.php?topic=5.0

follow the instructions for uploading then browse for these files for analysis:
C:\WINNT\system\eukb.exe
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\wbdbase.deu

I was finally able to find ??explore.exe and delete it. Turns out that there were two hidden (non-ASCII) characters at the front. When it showed up in a directory listing it was displayed as "iexplore.exe". But the clue was that it sorted to the bottom of the directory listing and had not associated icon. Deleted it.

I posted to thespykiller but could not find eukb.exe. Will await my analysis.

You did a very good job, nicely done! Everything looks great! We will just wait for the analysis then proceed with the other fixes.

For the mean time:
Open up NOTEPAD, then copy & paste the follwing codes (starting from REGEDIT4). Save it on desktop as fixme.reg. Choose file types as ALL FILES.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"eukb.exe"=-

Now double-click fixme.reg then allow it to merge to the system.
(NOTE: You can delete this file afterwards.)

You can verify if the ??xplore.exe was totally exterminated and that the registry is totally fixed by running WinPFind then look for these entries:

Checking the Windows folder for system and hidden files within the last 60 days...

All clean, no ??explore.exe or eukb.exe.

Still no reply from the other forum.

Any idea why Windows update will download but not install now? I tried "net stop wuauserv", deleting C:\winnt\SoftwareDistribution, "net start wuauserv" which is the common fix with no luck.

Looking very good. You it well :tazz:

Hello, we are going to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan. If this still asks you to put in your windows CD, and you do not have the CD (If you bought it preinstalled) post back for more tips, otherwise enter Windows CD.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer

View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
