Opening a WORD97 shortcut on the desktop

I placed a shortcut to a WORD97 file on my desktop for ready access. And it does work. But, for some reason, it takes a full minute after I click the shortcut before the file appears. Why is that?

I am using a W98 pc with a Pentium II chip. The system responds properly (that is,. at much faster speed) when I use WORD "normally", ie by opening a file from the desktop WORD icon.

Thanks for your help. ....wdc
