<_< Norton A-V has been blowing up here on a friend's computer for a loooonnnng time. gets to c:\I386\$OEM$\$\I\Drivers, freezes this Dell & requires a system restart by turning it off/on. Then at startup get "RUNDLL: error loading c:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\F3SCRCTR.DLL; then Norton takes off again with a virus ?mscache? (something like that) & can't repair or quarantine or delete. This is messy. Any ideas? Is this because I tried to download the XP Service Pack 2 & IT blew up & nothing seems to work right. Cannot get SP2 to load no matter what I do!

Any help for this? the following is a HJT log, if that helps any.

Thanks, in advance for ANY help you can give me. Again, lost as usual!

Never install SP2 unless the system has been cleared of malware first. <_<

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dsjkrl.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker <- this folder
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH <- this folder
C:\WINDOWS\web <- this folder

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :D

Thank you so much for a quick reply and all the info.

I'll go over & try these items later today, but I do have one question -- after XP SP2 blew up, I went to add/remove programs & removed it as instructed in the install info. However, above the line that was Windows XP Serv Pk 2 were a bunch of lines that showed up as 'hotfix' and the name with (SP2) contained in the name. Should I remove those also? I wasn't sure so didn't do anything with them.

Again, thanks so much for your help! Y'all are truly wonderful.

HI! did as you asked & here is the new HJT log. Please let me know what else I need to do.

Norton A-V still hangs the system on C:\I386\$OEM$\$\I\Drivers & must reboot the system. Any help for this? The only other info comes with a report to MS and it tells me that this is an Intel problem and there is no known fix for it. Altho Norton AV used to work all the way thru the system (8/2003)

AND Norton gives error: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\asqkfkgw.dll is infected with the Downloader.MSCache virus. Access to the file was denied.

The error report next entry is the same except it says Unable to repair this file.

Are either of these files okay to delete?

Anyway....here is my HJT log - should I try to input the Service Pack 2 update now?

Thank you so much for your help! I don't know much about all this - but y'all are making it easy to look as tho I do! <_<

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
