I am having an issue with this stealth virus/trojan/worm/spyware. Everytime I open an IE explorer page, I get diverted to either bestweblinks.com, oneclicksearches.com or dofinder.com.

I am running Norton 05 which has been updated. I have also installed, updated (where applicable) and run ad-aware SE, spy-bot, ewido security suite, trojanhunter and CWshredder. I can't update trend housecall or any windows updates as I can't get to their sites.

It seems everytime I think I have the problems beaten, it just re-appears again.

Any assistance you can provide me with, will be greatly appreciated, as this is starting to sorely test my patience. <beware of flying computers> lol.

Hi Excal ;) ,

No problem about the delay in replying, I understand everyone has a life.

The problems haven't been rectified as yet. I can't post a new log today as I forgot to bring a new CD home from work <whacking herself in the head>. To post anything from my computer, I have to copy it to CD, and post it using a laptop I have borrowed from work. I cannot access ANY website using my computer, which is very frustrating. Tht's why I haven't used Trend Housecall to try and sort out my issue.

The computer with the problem hasn't been touched since I posted the log above though. I have come to the end of my "experience" and figured it was better to only give you one problem to help me with, rather than me trying to "fix" it myself and making it worse. :tazz:

Any assistance you can offer me will be gratefully received, and followed to the letter.

Thanks

Hi Kelsbelles,

I would prefer another log if oyu don't mind. Things can change with a simple restart of the computer.

Thanks,

No Problem Excal,

I will get my partner to pick up a new CD on his way home from soccer. Will take me about an hour or so until I can post the new log though, so please don't think I am ignoring you :tazz:

Hi Kelsbelles,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please Update you Ewido if you haven't already done so :tazz:

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.bestwebsl...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.bestwebsl...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.bestwebsl...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.bestwebsl...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.bestwebsl...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp4EB7.tmp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

12. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

13. Run the program CleanUp!

14. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

15. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

It looks like my computer is operating as it should. Hopefully you'll come back to me and tell me that it really is all clear!

Excal, YOU ROCK you are worth your weight in gold! :) I truly appreciate what you have done to help me, I'm sure you can imagine the frustration I was experiencing. :tazz:

Now I am going to bed and will have another look at this in the morning. Goodnight :-)

Opps, sorry Excal, :tazz: Guess that's what happens when you do this stuff at midnight, while feeding a baby.

Here is the Active Scan log I forgot to post;

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/cws.homesearchasisstantNo disinfected Windows Registry
Virus:Exploit/ByteVerify Disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0\archive.jar-6aeb3825-55dc0362.zip[Dummy.class]

Thanks, and apologies for the hassle of having to look at this again.

LOL, i feel your pain!
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0\archive.jar-6aeb3825-55dc0362.zip
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "YES".
Go to http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Scroll down to

Registry Search Tool
Search the Windows Registry for input string and display results (easier than repeatedly hitting the F3 key in RegEdit).

Script revised 13 Dec 2001 to work with Windows XP and Windows 2000.

And download this script :tazz:

Open the RegSearch folder and double click RegSearch.vbs. Allow it to run.
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a script file, allow the script to run.

copy and paste this in: cws.homesearchasisstant then hit "ok"

RegSearch will "disappear" but it is actually searching the registry for that entry.

Copy and paste what it finds into a Notepad file.

I ran the program as you have said.

It told me there was no instance of cws.searchasisstant found. There wasn't an option in the window to allow me to copy anything.

Excal, everything is running like a charm, thanks to you - (K) ;)

Now, how are you with getting 6 month old party girls to sleep through the night? lol

Seriously, your help and patience is greatly appreciated. A fella at work considers himself a "computer genius" - his best advice was to update Norton (despite the fact he knew it was already updated, and running at the time the virus infected the computer!)

Now I think I'd like to know more about this sort of stuff, so I'll check out GeekU :) and see if it's within my capabilities.

Thanks again

Getting a 6 month old to sleep....ummmmm. Lol my kids are 5 and 8, been a while since I had to do that. All i say now is "go to bed" and for the most part it works...lol

A fella at work considers himself a "computer genius"

lmao, one week at GeekU and you would be making his head spin with information. I don't like people like that who have to pretend. You either know it, or you want to learn, no big deal either way. Hope to see you in our endless fight against Malware. You need any help, please ask ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
