Here is my story:

A few months ago, my gf clicked a link in her friend's AIM profile and opened something like pics.exe or some such trojan-infested nonesense. I let it go for a long time, but yesterday I couldn't even get my computer to logon from all the unneeded processes and whatever else was going on in the background. I came to this site, did everything on the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" post. This includes Adaware, Ewido scans, the works. Now there appears to be nothing wrong with my computer at all, so thanks Geekstogo! But, just to make sure, I ran Hijack This! and I want to know if it is safe to install sp2 and consider my computer 'cleaned.' Thanks!

Hi rosencrantz247, welcome to GeeksToGo

You still have many infections on that computer, so please don't attempt to download SP2 yet. Now first off, we need to get Newdotnet off that computer.

First, Download LSPFix.exe to a convenient location. Do NOT run this program. This is only to be used if you lose Internet Access after removing NewDotNet.

To Get rid of NewDotNet, go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

New.Net Applications or New.Net Domains (anything that says New.Net)

If it is not there, go here and follow Procedure 4: NewDotNet Removal Procedure 4.

In the event that you lose Internet access after removing New.Net, please double-click LSPFix.exe that you downloaded earlier. You will see 2 panels. If there is any file listed in the "Remove" panel on the right-side, leave it as is and just click "Finish>>" then reboot your computer and you should now have access to the Internet. If nothing is listed under the "Remove Panel", do NOT do anything - just close the program. You will need to use another computer to come back here for further instructions on what to do.

If you experience no problems with the above procedure, go here and make an online virus scan, let it remove whatever it finds.(check Autoclean)

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Next, go here and do a second scan. Again let it remove all and this time save the results as a text file.

http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/

Then come back here and post a new HijackThis log and the Panda results.

I could not finish the Panda scan of my system. It inexplicably closes after scanning maybe 10% of my files. I unistalled New.net with the Procedure 4 method, as my Control Panel Uninstall claimed that New.net was no longer on the system (a lie, I think). I still have Internet access, so it's not all bad. Here's my HijackThis! log:

I'd like to make sure the worm is gone. Let's run this removal tool.

Download F-Bot.exe from F-Secure. Save it to your desktop.

If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, disconnect the computer from the network and the Internet. Next, close all open programs, windows and browsers before running the tools.

Double click on F-Bot.exe to run the tool. Reboot when done.

Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetwork.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD.COM
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.com

C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tracert.com
C:\WINDOWS\parnt.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SVCHOSTA.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sndcfg16.exe
C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After the reboot run HijackThis again. Check the following items in HijackThis if still there.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:
Note the items in red, if you didn't put those restrictions via Spybot or another program fix them, if you did, leave them.

Computer is running okay, but not perfect. Sometimes programs simply will *not* open. The computer thinks, makes that wonderful bubbly sound, then nothing. Then, sometime later, without provocation, the program will suddenly open. This usually happens with taskman.exe, but has just recently happened with explorer and notepad. Also, my task manager is showing 100% CPU constantly with the following two processes eating up the CPU:
-PROCESS: svhost.exe USERNAME: System CPU: 50-60
-PROCESS: System USERNAME: System CPU: 40-50

Don't know if that is important. Other than that, the pesky failed lookups for worms that used to pop up at startup (things like :Unable to find blah blah blah) have vanished. Here is the log.

EDIT: Can you tell me what this program is?
C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe

EDIT II: Now my computer is doing that 'I don't feel like opening programs' thing with all sorts of programs, from Solitaire to CleanUp! Perhaps this is something I should be worried about?

You log looks clean now.

C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe This is IBM AMR modem driver.

Are you on broadband or dialup? In any event try turning Automatic Updates off and see if that helps..if not report back and let's try turning off some off the programs that are not necessary to run on startup..

On a reboot, this went away, and hasn't come back since. I don't think it is something malicious, so I'm not worrying too much. Computer runs nice and my temp file remover CleanUp! finds about 45,000 less temp files (especially the ones that make Norton so very upset :tazz: ) Think this computer is ready for Service Pack 2 yet? After a run of Ewido and AdAware of course.

I'm on broadband, by the way. Is there a way I can get Norton to stop trying to get me to buy it and Trojan Hunter to understand that I have already installed it several times? [On startup, I mean]

Norton and Trojanhunter both are shareware programs and unless you're going to buy them, I'd suggest uninstalling them. Especially Norton, since you wouldn't be able to update it unless you buy it. I'm an ex-Norton user and I'm using AntiVir now, it's free. Another equally good one, is AVG, again free. Here's the links:

Antivir
AVG

And yes, it may be a good time to update to SP2 now. Please do so and report back whether you encountered any problems with the update or afterwards.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

Now you should go get a firewall. Don't rely on the Windows firewall as it monitors only incoming traffic. Pick one of these, they are all free.
Kerio
Zonealarm
Sygate

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates. You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE

A good article to read:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Armodeluxe
