Battery life rapidly diminished

Got a laptop in Nov and battery was lasting approx 5 hours then suddenly went down to lasting ony about one hour. I was told that the processes is draining the computer ( approx 50+ running) is this feasable, if not what caused the rapid decline. Any help is appreciated.
