My first time here. Followed all advice on this site. Using Adaware, Counter Spy, Microsoft anti-spyware and Spybot search and destroy, yet multiple pop-ups keep occuring (with and without contents)-especially media.fastclick and many others.
I would REALLY appreciate some help! Here is my Hijack this Logfile:

Hello Steve and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a cleanish HJT log, not a lot to see wrong, and I am always wary of these for their ultimate surprises. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable CounterSpy for the same reason. Please note that you should only have one real-time antispyware programme running. Please only enable one after you have been declared clean. Other antispyware programmes should be used for “on demand” scans.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Thanks for the help. I have been really busy and trying your suggestions when I can but things are getting worse. I am using Counterspy, and Ewido and did everything you said. Biggest trouble is with 64.27.100.65 and something called adopt a bar, or something like that,
Here is my new hijack log:
I wish we could fix this:

Hello again Steve

It's unusual to defeat these pests in the first sweep, but often you reveal the real problem. I am fairly certain that yours is a VX2 infection, which we will deal with now.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Again, thanks for trying to help. I downloaded L2Mfix and installed it, however, everytime I double click on the l2mfix.bat file, nothing happens at all. I have tried many times with no luck.
Also, the spyware giving me the most trouble is:
adopt.hotbar.com

Let me know what I should do.
Thanks,
Steve

Hello again Steve

I am going to disagree with you. Your biggest problem is VX2, but you are having difficulty in running it. You must give it time. It is not a spit second scan. It might take 30 minutes.

However, let me do this backwards if it helps you. Let's clean up your other problem and come back to this one.

To start please download the following programme, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
Hoster

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O1 - Hosts: 17.250.248.77 idisk0.mac.com idisk1.mac.com idisk2.mac.com idisk3.mac.com idisk4.mac.com idisk5.mac.com idisk6.mac.com idisk7.mac.com idisk8.mac.com idisk9.mac.com idisk10.mac.com idisk11.mac.com idisk12.mac.com idisk13.mac.com idisk14.mac.com idisk15.mac.com idisk16.mac.com idisk17.mac.com idisk18.mac.com idisk19.mac.com idisk20.mac.com idisk21.mac.com idisk22.mac.com idisk23.mac.com idisk24.mac.com idisk25.mac.com
O20 - Winlogon Notify: FolderGuard - C:\Program Files\Folder Guard Pro XP\FGuard32.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\Program Files\Folder Guard Pro XP\FGuard32.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Just a word of warning. If after carrying out this brief fix, you enable Microsoft Antispyware, it will undo the fix since it is trying to protect your registry entries from change.

Ran "Hoster" and "KillBox", did as you said. Still getting casalemedia, 64.27.100.65, and an odd thing, when I open my browser--IE5, it opens twice...don't know if that helps.
Here is the latest Hijack log,
THanks again...

OK, we got rid of the changing host file, but we still have VX2 so it's back to L2M fix. Try running #1 again please and sending me the log.

BTW, both antispywares are still appearing as running processes.

Hello again,
I figured out how to disable counterspy and went through the suggestions we mentioned.
I assume this was just temporary for while I ran thru some utilities, because with CounterSpy disabled I really seemed to be under attack:
This is a post I sent to Counter Spy help:

Counter spy seems to be finding spyware better than any
other products, but even after I remove them, the same
spyware keeps returning..even if I Quarantine..ie
Claria,ad.yieldmanager., 64.27.100.65, and
adopt.hotbar.com....they won't go away. Plus after I let
Counter spy take Action, I get an error message that
Dr.Watson Debugger (drwrsn32,exe) needs to shut down. Also
IE5 will often reopen on it's own while I am writing an
email and pop ups will start opening. Please Help.

I am really getting close to wiping the drive clean and starting again, but a) that will take so much time to get everything going again b) it may be no guarantee I won't get hit again....
One other thing...could Yahoo Desktop search be causing a problem?
Just a thought.
Thanks for your continued support.

Hello again Steve

It is possibly coincidental that Microsoft Antispyware was owned by Giant until around Christmas 2004, and that Counter Spy is another Giant product licensed to Sunbelt. Just an observation, no insinuations intended.

You mentioned DrWatson Debugger, which is a different problem altogether and might be your problem here. That is normally caused by video codecs and deleting (uninstalling) them normally sorts it out. Do this by looking at all the programmes in the ADD/REMOVE in the Contol Panel. If you find them, you will also need to remove them in the Device Manager. Right click My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager and delete the problem entries.

Please visit Kaspersky for an online scan.

L2MFIX has been changed in the last day or so. Please delete the copy on your PC and redownload the latest from the same URL as before. Try running it again.

Final question, are you the only identity on this PC?
