My PC is severely infected and I now cannot access internet and it doesn't even recognise rescue disk. I read a reference by Murray S to go to Malware "in his signature" which looked like a good starting point but I couldn't see his signature and there are 63 pages.

Any suggestions to get startd will be greatly appreciated. You probably guessed, first time and not too sharp on computres. Am using my fully funtioning laptop.

Thanks

Hello

I have been trying to resolve multiple problems with my PC which orignated with PSGUARD appearing and smitRem. I have carried out all of the preliminary steps as far as possible but still detecting 7 files of smitRem which cannot be removed and PC running at 14% or even less. I am using Windows ME. Would greatly appreciate further help.

Hello TB thanks for reply.

I have done those things except could only find msnsgs.exe in program files\messenger so hope I have got correct one!

psguard MAY just be gone but each time I run spybot, it picks up 7 files of smitfraud-c which it cannot get rid off and some other files such as advertising.com and media update (I will copy these at the very end of the hijack log but well separated for your info) these files can be deleted and I assume they are normal and benign? Spybot was run AFTER hijack log.

Additionally the PC is constantly running on very low resources say 7-9% and even after I clean up start menu and get it up to 50% it soon reverts to 7% or so and so inhibits the smallest task.
(by the way since first posting I have managed to carry)out all the preliminary steps as per hijack forum introductory instructions.

Thanks in advance

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Remove the check by "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know how your PC is now

Well I have done most of what you said but with one or two glitches:

a) could not find the option "View my Atcive desktop as a web page" anywhere and of course could not disable. (I am running ME and not XP on desktop)
b) Panda Activescan did not give option to select Autoclean (the downloaded version does not clean or disinfect the items listed in log (the Pro version does)
c) No Ewido log as this wil run only on XP or 2000 apparently

Sorry but I seemed to have failed on several counts.

Have listed in following order: New Hijack log; Smit log and Panda Activscan log.

PC still running with very low resources available.

Hope you can help further, thnks for all so far.

Hi Starbear,

We need to delete the oleext.dll file. It is vbery stubborn therefore we have to go in a round about way to delete it.

Click start>run and type command.

Type:

copy c:\windows\system\wininet.dll c:\windows\desktop

Reboot. Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.

Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.

del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll

del c:\windows\system\oleext.dll

del c:\windows\system\ole32vbs.exe

copy c:\windows\desktop\wininet.dll c:\windows\system

Reboot the PC and let me know how it goes

I am sorry TB but I could not make any of your last intructions work at all. I know this must be very frustrating for you dealing with idiots (or Numptys as we call us in Scotland!) but I am trying. Would mind trying again please with very explicit steps. I thought I was getting there in MSdos prompt but each time I typed a command it said file or path not found. And the scan didn't give me any options never mind specifying Desktop.

Thanks for patience

Hi Starbear,

No problem. I will explain the instructions in greater detail. I will infact change them slightly so that they are more user friendly !!!

We need to delete the oleext.dll file. It is vbery stubborn therefore we have to go in a round about way to delete it.

Create a new folder c:\smit using Windows Explorer.

Click start>run and type command.

Type:

copy <space> c:\windows\system\wininet.dll <space> c:\smit\wininet.dll

(of course please dont put space while typing the command actually).

Reboot.

Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. This scanner will only work with Internet Explorer.

Once the signature files are downloaded and the virus scanner is ready, Click on Start Scan. In the window, you will see different folders and drives listed. Click on the + sign next to C:. A list of folders will drop down under it. Check the box next to the folder smit. Now click on Start Scan.

The scanner will check the file wininet.dll for infection. If it is infected, it will get listed as an infected file. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.

Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.

del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll

del c:\windows\system\oleext.dll

del c:\windows\system\ole32vbs.exe

copy <space> c:\smit\wininet.dll <space> c:\windows\system

Reboot the PC and let me know how it goes

I am clearly missing something as I am just not getting there. I created the smit file (not sure if I did it using explorer or not!) but when I ran scanner it did not find any infection but then why would it if I had just created that file?? Carried on and tried to type commands in MS dos and either got acces denied or file not recognised. Where am I going wrong please?

Hi Starbear,

Lets try something tangential.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and upload the file - c:\windows\system\wininet.dll.

Post back the scan results.

I will then decide how to best go about cleaning up the file, if it comes to that

Thanks TB, here you go. For your info, it will probably about 24 hours+ before I can get back to PC so please don't think I am ignoring any return posts. I really appreciate all your efforts. Starbear

Hello again.

spybot is still picking up 7 items of smitfraud and the PC resources ofetn go down to a very low level but this latter MAY just be because too much stuff opening on start menu though I keep clearing that out it seems to launch stuff that I have removed from that menu. I probably need to go a bit deeper to sort that out OR it may be this smitfraud thing.
