I've been having some trouble with my computer lately.

1: When I restart my computer it doesn't load Windows completely on the boot screen (the screen that shows the Windows logo and a infinitlyloading bar) and restarts again and goes to a screen that asks me to choose a mode of starting Windows (safe mode, normal, last known working... etc). I select normal mode and sometimes it would restart again as it did before, while other times it will just take a really long time to load Windows on the boot screen (the screen that shows the Windows logo and a infinitlyloading bar) and then actually work.

2: My conputer has been really slow lately. I'm aware it might be because of my processor but it has never been THIS slow. It takes 2 seconds to load anything on my computer and actually goes to the flashlight thingy when I open My Computer.

I'm wondering what might be the problem. Can anyone help?

Hello Marius and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware

Please install Spybot search & destroy, open it, update it, immunize it, and perform a scan. When it has completed, ensure that you check everything it finds coloured Red only before clicking Fix Selected Problems. If Spybot requests starting again at reboot to clear memory resident malware, please ensure you click YES, giving it permission to do so.

Install Ad-Aware and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page.

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsConfigs] C:\Program Files\MsConfigs\MsConfigs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. .

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\MsConfigs\

Close Windows Explorer

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

p2pnetwork.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I seem to be having trouble with Ad-Aware SE. When I choose the In-Depth scan for my hard drive it just says is now scanning but the number of objects scanned stays at 0. If I choose the full system scan the number of objects scanned stays at 51213. It is not frozen coz I can cancel the scan but I don't know what the problem is.

Nothing happens when I press Paste from Clipboard while under Safe Mode. Also I have another thing called "bt.exe". It was discovered by Ewido but didn't show up in the HiJackThis log.

Do I paste from clipboard after I restard the computer since it's not working while under Safe Mode or what do I do?

Anyway, I couldn't "past from clipboard" in KillBox while either in Safe Mode or Normal Mode. So I skipped that step hoping that it won't cause the problem to return. I have used CCleanup and here is my new HiJackThis log. Also the log from Ewido. I'm still wondering about the bt.exe thingy, if it's still in my computer.

Hello again Marius

Considering you had problems with Killbox and Ad-Aware, what a difference to your HJT log; it's a lot better.

If you look again at my first post to you, I mention multiple identity PC's. Looking at your Ewido log, I see three names: Adrian, Alex and Angie. Do all of the names have their own logon?

Let's do the second sweep and see where that takes us.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark against the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and delete it:

p2pnetwork.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

The other thing I notice is that you appear not to have an antivirus programme running. This being the case, you must correct this.

Please dpwmload and install.
AVG ANTIVIRUS

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Yes, Adrian, Alex, and Angie are different users on this computer.

Ok, here you go. It seems the problems have been fixed, on the monitor anyway. But my computer is still amazingly slow. It takes nearly, if not, 2 minutes to load Windows in that boot screen (The one with the Windows logo and an infinate loading bar) and when I log on my account the sound quality is gargley and slow at first. Also while listening to Winamp it will sometimes go slow (again gargley) and I can't seem to run any program while listening to it because it will always be slow like that. It takes 30 seconds, if not more, to open a new window in Internet Explorer and the computer seems slow with relations to different folders. Also when I try to delete a folder of an uninstalled game it gives me this message "Cannot remove folder models_unit: The directory is not empty". And it is, on top of that it's very slow when I want to do anything with that folder. Last time it gave a different message which I can't recreate or remember now.

What is the problem? Also, Sygate, my firewall, asked me if I wanted to allow the files winlogon.exe and logonui.exe to access my internet connection. Which it never had done before.

I have one final question, what does system restore do in safe mode if you select that you don't want to continue in safe mode.

Hello again Marius

You do not appear to have installed an antivirus programme.

That log is clean. Please submit a fresh HJT log for each additional user, excluding the one I have just seen.

The speed of a PC is a very complex matter. Once I have seen the other logs and cleaned them, we should be able to rule out malwae as the cause.

At that point, it might be a good idea to visit our WinXP forum and seek advice there.

One thing that puzzles me a lot is why do people install a second Firewall to their PC's? The one that comes built in to Windows is excellent (in the conrool panel) and a second is not only unnecessary, but it will slow down a PC.

Normally the main culprit for tardiness is too many programmes launching at start-up, and most of them not essential or even necessary; you have 12, I have 3. Also I run my PC "skinny", with no pictorial backgrounds or theme, no fancy "bells and whistles" in fact no "eye candy" at all.

You can also do this by going to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>ADVANCED>PERFORMANCE SETTINGS choose ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE>APPLY>OK.

I looked at the question you posed, but did not really understand it. Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that does not load start-up programmes other than essentials. A Restore Point is a historical registry setting.

yeah, the Restore Point, if you select to go to a restore point what does the computer do? Heh, and about my bells and whistles and running it "fat" LOL, it wasn't a problem before. And I haven't installed anything in a long time, I've only uninstalled lately.

I'm going to buy a new HDD this weekend. I'll have to reformat this one for my sister anyway so I think I can live with this for a few more days. You have been a big help, :tazz: I'll come with my problems to you guys. ;) So I'll let you help other more needy people.

Thank you a lot again. I'll take your advice and run my PC "skinny". LOL gotta love that... :) sorry, not making fun of it, I'm just enjoy the concept of it. Thank you again.

If you go to a restore point, your PC imports the registry settings, as they were at that time.

This does not make a physical difference to what is already on your PC, but if you installed a programme after that date, your PC will not have the registry setting for it, therefore don't be surprised when it doesn't work.

I'll repeat what I said previously, the speed of a PC is a complex matter.

Now let me ask you a question:

What are doing about an antivirus programme?

When can I see the HJT logs for the other users?

Hmm, well I'll wait for week and install my Norton AntiVirus on both computers.

And about the HJT logs... I'm thinking of just stopping here. I can survive for a few more days with this, no problem. If that's ok with you.

It's your choice, and you are very welcome to the advice.

I will leave this thread open for a few days in case of misfortune.

Thanks, originally what stopped me from reformating was the songs I had on my HDD. But it seems even those had gotten infected and 80% of them were deleted in the process of cleaning my computer. Oh well.
