I don't know how, but somehow the malware ' psguard.exe ' got in my comp and has wreaked havoc, starting an entire process tree of malware. Some of psguard's buddies it has teamed up with include: intell32.exe, intmon.exe, intmonp.exe, msmsgs.exe, msole32.exe, popuper.exe, and shnlog.exe .... and that's only the ones I know of. I'm not positive all of these are malicious, but ZoneLabs has warned me they are acting suspicious.
Symptoms of these programs/viruses include constant popups to psguard.com, attempts to steal information, a black background saying "WARNING! your comp is infected with adware .... blah blah blah you need to go to psguard.com and give us your credit card # to fix this!" Of course I didn't give away any info to psguard.com since I realized it was a fake spyware utility that is actually bad. These programs have also changed all my browser settings, home page, won't let me search certain pages, crash the browser anytime I bring up info on antivirus, won't let me change or view many system settings like Display, etc. My computer has been slower than molasses in January, and tons of error messages (both valid and invalid-virus-created) and I can't do much online at all. I can't fix most of my setting either - when i reset them they default back the way the virus likes them.
Using my tiny bit of computer knowledge I was able to use ZoneLabs Security Suite and Norton Antivirus 2005 to quarantine/freeze-lock the bad programs I listed above manually. I deleted most of them (the ones that ZoneLabs identified as suspicious). I'm very surprised that numerous Norton Antivirus scans did not detect a single infected file. I tried using ZoneLab's antivirus, but it said I must delete Norton first - which lead me to another problem. Norton would not uninstall with Windows Add/Remove Programs - I've now run into several things that won't install or uninstall. My computer also has recently not been able to turn off without pulling the cord which I hate to do.
After deleting some of those programs the comp is a little faster and doesn't have as many virus related problems, but several of them still persist (especially the internet settings and crashed). I am paranoid to use any personal info, and feel quite violated. I just want my computer back. I'm afraid in my ' deleting-panic ' I might not have cleared the registry correctly. I am at the point where I really need help, and would deeply appreciate it. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all this - maybe you can relate to my frusteration.

PS- I read about how to use and include HiJackThis, so I included my most recent log file. Cheers.

Hi,

There are a few infections on your PC apart from the "bad" PSGuard / Smitfraud. We will have to clean up that junk first and then attackt the PSGuard and Smitfraud issue.

First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

1. Download Programs

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
2. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.oneclicks...es.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINNT\system32\hpB035.tmp

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

3. Delete Rogue files

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

Files
C:\WINNT\system32\hpB035.tmp
C:\Documents and Settings\Anne\My Documents\My Zips\lakefree.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Anne\My Documents\My Zips\waterfree.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\hhk.dll

4. Remove Infections

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Hi, I completed the directions and everything seems to be running fine except Windows now looks like the old 98 style grey boxy toolbars/buttons etc. I read about replacing a luna (sp?) file here: http://www.geekstogo...1625&hl=psguard but found that the link was not valid. Other than that everything so far looks okay. Thanks a bunch!

PS- Whenever I start windows or open a program, a small Windows Installer progress bar pops up and then disapears. Is this another threat or just an annoyance? Also, just out of curiosity I was wondering what these startup codes were for:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O23 - Service: PictureTaker - Unknown owner - c:\fixit\pt\PCTKRNT.SYS (file missing)

Hi,

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install

This entry refers to the operating wizard related to NVIDIA graphics card and its software.

O23 - Service: PictureTaker - Unknown owner - c:\fixit\pt\PCTKRNT.SYS (file missing)

This entry refers to software Picture Taker (most probably the Enterprise Version 3.1). Is there any reason why it should not be there ????

Regarding your installer pop-up, please click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control Panel ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> System Tools ---> Even Viewer ---> Application.

Locate item "MsiInstaller" under the column heading Source. There may be a few instances of it in the recent times. Check a few of them. Double click on it and make a note of the description. Post the descriptions back here.

Thanks, I am just ignorant and I was curious what they were. Regarding MsiInstaller in Event Viewer, there must be at lease 50 or more of these instances, all over the last few weeks. I'm not sure which ones you want, or if you want all of them, so I'll post the first, last, and a few in between for now.

Hi,

First of all, regarding the installer, The problem seems to be happening because of Microsoft Money. Do you have the CD for Microsoft Money ??? Let me know about it.

Your Norton software also doesnt seem to have installed properly. We first need to resolve the Money issue and then we can tackle Norton.

Second regarding the other profile where you are having the "infection" -

Okay, I will run these programs as soon as I get home from work. I'll also have to look around and see if I have the CD for Microsoft Money in some of the packaging that came with the computer because I can't remember ever installing it myself. If I can't find the CD, is there another way to just get rid of Microsoft Money? I don't necesarily need or want that program. Thanks for your help.

Spybot found that every user was clean except for me... It found seven cases of Smitfraud-C but could not fix or delete them because it said these files were running in memory and I needed to Restart. After I restarted, Spybot autoscanned and did the same thing - found seven cases of Smitfraud-C but couldn't get rid of them. I did this roundabout one more time before running SmitREM (runthis.bat) and then doing SpyBot again... but the same thing with the failed-attempt and Restart kept happening. Frusterating...

Copy the following in a text file in Notepad and save it as fix.reg (make sure that the Save as Type is set to All Files) -

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-670770235-1106520001-315636210-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\awmdabest.com]

Double click on fix.reg and let it merge with your registry.

Do you have any other issue with your PC ?? Is the Installer thing still bugging you ???

Thanks tampabelle! So far I seem to be virus and spyware free. Nevertheless, my computer is extremely slower than it used to be. Is that normal? I am still having those Installer problems - the window popping up all the time, and the inability to uninstall/install programs. Norton doesn't seem to be starting up/running right either, and Windows Security Center occasionally (after startup) claims that my antivirus protection is out of date or ineffective. After Norton let me down earlier I am about ready to get a new Antivirus. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Hold on to Norton for some more time. We will tackle it at the end.

Please visit Microsoft at this page - http://support.micro...kb;en-us;290301.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and install it.

Run the utility. Let me know if you find Microsoft Money listed in the list of items.

In case you have problems in installing the software, let me know
