Howdy and welcome to G2G:

Not sure what you are referring to here.. No such thing as plain old XP.. You will either have XP Home Edition or XP Pro..

1) what is the difference between XP and XP professional?
Xp pro has a little more security feature like, password restrictions, login attempt restrictions etc.

2) Can XP professional be loaded onto a computer with XP?
If your asking can windows SP pro can be upgraded on an XP home computer, Yes it can. BUT it is suggested to do a clean install

3) If it can will anything be lost?
It is suggested to do a Clean install of the OS, but if you do an upgrade, then no I dont think that anything would be los (depending what you have installed)t.

4) What makes XP professional more used at colleges?
