Hi there GTGers
I'm having some odd things happen, this is my second go at this topic, posted it
yesterday not on forum today?.
Anyway here's my situation.
PC had some malware infections which were sorted, as far as I know, over the last
couple of weeks corresponding with one of kind GTG helpers(kool808) and much thanks
for that help.
At the same time PC was declared clean I also recieved notification that my 12 month
subscription with McAfee was about to lapse so I uninstalled it,deleted any other files
using 'Find',and downloaded AVG.
On the first scan with AVG 2 trojans were detected and deleted,I don't know if these were missed or picked up during the process of changing Antivirus software.
Unfortunately the thread I was using was closed by then and I've had no reply to my
new post refering to it,so I am not sure if my problems are related to any virus and am assuming not.
Slow startup and incomplete shutdown are what started the process in the first place and nothing changed after my pc was declared clean.
Slow startup is selfexplanatory,by incomplete shutdown I mean after the 'Windows is shutting down ' window the 'It is now safe to turn off your computer' does not, instead
the screen goes black but for a cursor flashing in the top LH corner.
If I then turn off the pc, when restarted it does not however do the whole 'because your computer was not shut down properly' process.
I have tried RUN/sfc,and scanreg.exe/fix.
From safe mode the pc does shut as it should.
It may also help to note that if I try to run adaware and spybot one after the other in safemode 'fatal error'but run one, restart, run the next and no problem(in safe mode).

Thanks for your response pip22
After going through the steps suggested by 'Startup and shutdown troubleshooting wizard' it seems EMM386.EXE in msconfig is the line causing the problem.
I did search the windows site but its a bit beyond me perhaps you could help to simplify
,why now ,and what to do next. :tazz:

Normally, when 98 is slow to shut down it's because some background program is taking too long to shut itself down. So Win98 is waiting for it to close before it shuts down completely. This is why safe mode shuts down ok. Did you by chance disable "fast shutdown" using msconfig?

Can you "attach" a HJT log and also a startup log here so we can see what programs are running. Perhaps we can stop some programs from loading in the first place.

Thanks makai
Following the instructions of the shutdown startup toubleshooting wizard led to unchecking :-DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE, inconfig.sys tab.
The only other line there is - DEVICE:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
After unchecking the emm line pc shutsdown normally.
However an error occurs in DOS(Ihad to run step by step confirmation to catch it)-
Creative SB16 Emulation Driver ,Version 3.07 Copyright blahblah
error:Memory Manager not detected
Creative SB16 Emulation Driver requires EMM386 or similar
" " " " Not loading
(I've had to retype this reply 3 times now chasing the correct info :tazz: but was not
able to find out how to startup log :) )
Here is my Hjt log tho

Sorry about posting the log,I read the 'attach' a moment too late.
Did wonder about the request at first tho cause I now this ain't the forum for them:)

Yes, normally, we don't ask for HJT logs to be posted here. But sometimes the logs help to analyze what programs are starting up that may be causing problems. What you shouldn’t do is post a log “before” someone asks you to.

You have a lot of startup programs and a few auto-updaters running. Auto-updaters do exactly what they're supposed to do... they constantly search for updates. It's possible that during shutdown, one of the updaters is still running and windows is waiting for it to end it's process before it can shut down.

Go to Start/run, and type in msconfig. On the General tab, click on Advanced and make sure “Disable fast shutdown” is checked.

Then go to the Startup tab and look for any entries that have the word "update", or "updater" in its name and uncheck them, then click ok. You will be asked to restart your computer. Don't worry, you can recheck them later if this doesn't help.

After you restart, go ahead an do whatever you do normally. Later on when you want to shut down, see if the changes have helped.

PM me later to let me know how it goes as I might forget to check this thread.

Thanks makai
I could not find a 'disable fast shutdown'
I unchecked 2 lines with update in them and also a couple of others I'm fairly sure do not need to load at startup.
The emm386 line in config.sys still the one prevents normal shutdown.

Sorry, I couldn't get back to you last night. I was a little busy.

I'm not sure what emm386 is and how it's affecting your computer. But anyways, here's a M$ article about emm386. I know it talks about locking up the computer, but it might lend some insight. Try reading it over and seeing if it helps.

Thanks makai
I had looked at that info but didn't realy understand much.
Having the line containing emm386 in msconfig unchecked dosn't seem to be affecting
nothing so I'll prbably just leave it at that.
Thanks again for your attention :tazz:
