I have had this problem for a few weeks in where when im playing a video or playing music on the pc it sounds distorted and when using the pc for something else. ie surfing the net the music/video grinds to a halt and sounds horrible.

I had realtek installed but i think i have managed to disable this and install a soundcard which hasnt addressed the problem.

What can be causing the distortion as i have also uninstalled quicktime and winamp just incase these were clashing when playing an mp3.

Is my only option to do a system restore to correct this problem or has someone out there managed to fix this problem or had any experience of it

Much help would be appreciated on this.

You may have to disable the on-board sound card in your bios. Did you do that?

What kind of sound card did you install? Isn't the Ensemble Envy24 Audio controller part of the motherboard?

If this is an Everest report, please go back into the program and see what it lists for your sound card manufacture and model.

Also check Device manager and see what it detects your sound card to be.

Also, please post a HJT log so we can see what is being loaded... go here to download HijackThis. Run the program, save a log, and post it here.

ive added a phillips pSC724 soundcard. i will add the details as described within the everest report shortly.

i have checked the device manager and the phillips card is the only one recognised.

i will add the hijack log as well shortly. How could this affect my machine?

The log is just so we can see what things are loading during startup. You needn't post a log if you're uncomfortable.

Ok, why don't you do this... Run HJT and save a log to your desktop... also save a Startup log. Look over the logs and see if anything related to your "old" soundcard is loading at startup. You may have to google some of the entries if you don't recognize them.

If you do see something, you may have to stop it from loading in case it's conflicting with the new card you installed.

ok. i shall add this on. Ive checked for spyware and also a virus but that has turned up a blank.

I am not looking for spyware. But, here is a link you can use to help you identify some of the start items. Just paste your HJT log in the window and click on submit.

You still have Realtek (Soundman) software running on your computer. Did you uninstall the AC97 drivers before installing your new soundcard?

Go to Start/run... type in msconfig then go to the Startup tab. In the list displayed, find and uncheck any reference to Soundman.exe. You will have to reboot for the changes to take affect.

Also, your antivirus program may be monitoring every type of file. If disabling soundman doesn't help, try disabling your antivirus to see if it affects your sound files.
