Hi folks.

Basically, I have a nasty virus on MSN - called the "Kelvir/Worm"

I have "taken the 7 steps" as suggested by one of the moderators, but to no avail.

Thanks if you can help.

Hello and welcome!

You have few infections there.. Let's get started.

Firstly, I need you to create folder called C:\HJT.
When you have created the new folder, please move HiJackThis.exe to that folder from the current location you have it. This is important so that HiJackThis can create backups if necessary. Delete your previous folder and empty recycle bin.

Once you have done that, please do the following;

Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start to scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Post the Kaspersky log here along with a fresh HiJackThis log.

Hello!

Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, launch Notepad, copy & paste the following text from the code box below, into a empty text file (Starting from @ECHO);

@ECHO OFF
cd\windows
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site;
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat

A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then, run LQfix.bat

When finished, reboot into normal mode.

Post a fresh HiJackThis log.

Rawe,

Thank's for your help thus far.

Highly appreciate it.

But I now seem to have a problem opening up files and running programs.

Eg; I cannot open up Wordpad. Every time I try and open it an error box pops up saying "You need to restart this program"

The only programs that seem to be working are IE and Firefox.

But this is only after I reboot the PC at least two or three times.

Thank's.

Hmm.. It just says you need to restart the program? Try if you can post me a fresh HiJackThis log and we'll continue--

But if you can't, I'll go and ask for a little help from tech people of the site.

Hi again, Rawe. :tazz:

Sorry, I wasn't more specific in detailing what the error box contains.

Eg; When I try and open say, HijackThis:

"Program Error"

"HijackThis.exe has generated errors
and will be closed by Windows."
"You need to restart the program."
"An error log is being created"

I've also noticed an error box identical to the one above popping up regularly, called: "AURARECO.exe has generated..........."

Cheers.

Can you uninstall your current version of HiJackThis using Add/Remove programs. Delete any leftover files. Empty recycle bin.

Get HiJackThis installer here.

Download it. When installing hit "Unzip", then "Close". Exit the installing screen. Go to the new folder named C:\Program Files\HiJackThis and then launch the program there.. See if it works?

Rawe,

No joy.

Same problem as before: Error box pops up and shuts the program down before it can start.

Can you download the following app: http://www.safer-net...es/delcwssk.zip

Unzip the program to your desktop in a own folder. Run the app, when it finishes.. Reboot. Try HiJackThis again.

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

First;

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Please download APT and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.
    • Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for mmbhmgv.exe.
    • Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for C:\SYSTEM\WINDOWS\system32\mmbhmgv.exe.
Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
    • In APT again, Select mmbhmgv.exe and Click Kill3
    • Then immediately delete C:\SYSTEM\WINDOWS\system32\mmbhmgv.exe from your system32 folder.
    Close APT.
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Launch Notepad, copy & paste the following text from the code box below, into a empty text file (Starting from @ECHO);

@ECHO OFF
cd\windows
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat

A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Run a scan with HiJackThis and check the following objects for removal if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.aaawebfinder.com/sp2.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.aaawebfinder.com/sp2.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.aaawebfinder.com/sp2.php
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.seekerbar...spx?tb_id=50154
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.aaawebfinder.com/sp2.php
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\SYSTEM\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe,C:\System\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kqswol] C:\SYSTEM\WINDOWS\system32\mmbhmgv.exe r
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\SYSTEM\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Close any other open windows, except for HiJackThis and hit FIX CHECKED.

Exit HJT.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Clean anything it finds.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close Ewido.

Reboot into normal mode and post a fresh HiJackThis log along with the Ewido log.

This will still be many stepped process since you have few other infections there as well.
