So I ran several downloaded programs to clean up my computer, get rid of adware problems, etc. I used the suggested list from the "do this before using HJT" on this site. I ran all the clean up programs (ie CW Shredder), and installed AVG (Anti-virus). I then shut down for the night, and planned to download the XP SP1a today.

Today, when I went to start my machine it won't let me log on to windows XP (home edition). I click "log on" it starts to register, and then says its logging off. This takes me right back to the logon screen.

I tried to boot in safe mode but to no avail...

HELP!!!!

I have a Sony VAIO from 2003...

Thanks so much for all the help...

I do not have an XP CD to boot from. It was already installed when I bought the computer. Should I bug the computer store for a copy, or do I hav alternatives?

All I get is a blank black screen (says safe at top and bottom). I get no options ...except to Ctrl-alt-del to get a task manager. No windows, no C Prompt, no nothing.

I do get an error message about userinit.exe.

Ok what is the error message ?
you say you get the option for task manager ? when you try ctrl alt del
does task manager run? If yes on the application tab click on new task.
Then follow these instructions
Userinit
