I'm having major issues with this computer. It's really bogged down and won't restart or shutdown without unplugging the power. Also on boot it says that it cannot find the file C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe. Is this the Aurora thing again?

I have current versions of the following software installed and have run everything:
Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
ewido
Zone Alarm firewall
Norton Antivirus 2005
Ad-Aware SE Plus w/ Ad-Watch
Trojan Hunter
Microsoft Antispyware
CleanUp!

This thing is making me nuts!
Anyway here is my hijackthis log. Help. Thanks in advance.

Heya and welcome to Geeks to Go, pandasam. My name is Guse and I'll be helping you.

I see that you already have ewido security suite
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Please download this file: Nailfix Utility
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Download dsrfix.zip
Save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip dsrfix.zip and extract it to your desktop.
  • This will create a new folder on your desktop named dsrfix.
  • Do Not open that folder yet.
Then immediately delete C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe.

To reboot into SafeMode with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start tapping press F8 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [agmcl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe
O16 - DPF: {75D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} - http://secure2.comne...iveSecurity.cab

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Now open the folder dsrfix on your desktop.
  • Double-Click on dsrfix.bat
  • A window will pop up briefly then close, this is normal.
Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp
Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log, as well as the ewido report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

:tazz: Wow... by all appearences we accomplished nothing. Let's try to get rid of Nail again, but a little different this time:

-edit-
Ahhh... you have Ad-Watch running. That will prevent most of what we're doing from actually working. You'll need to disable Ad-Watch before you go any further.
-end-

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

@ECHO OFF
cd\windows
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Open HijackThis
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

There will also be an item towards the bottom of the O4 section in HijackThis. In your previous log it was:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [agmcl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe

Check it. Then close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Then delete the file listed in the random O4 entry. In the above example you would delete

C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe

Restart your computer

Scan the computer with Ewido one last time.
Let it do a full run, than copy the log. Past it to a blank Notepad file and save it to post here.
Than let it rerun. Save that log too.

Post back here with a fresh log using HijackThis and both of the scan results.

ok I did almost everything you said. The only deviation was that I could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe. I searched the hard drive including hidden files and folders and found nothing, so I was unable to do the delete file step.

Here are my ewido logs:

The file is typically randomly named, so the first time we removed "agmcl.exe" with HijackThis, it must have worked. I don't see any evidence of Nail there anymore (which is a little surprising considering Ad-Watch was still on)... is the computer still giving you the same problems?

Let's so some minor housekeeping:

Run a scan with HijackThis. Place checks next to the following item:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Click Fix Checked and then reboot your computer.

When it gets done rebooting, run another HijackThis log and post it here along with your answer as to whether or not your computer is reacting better.

You've done great so far, and I think we just about have this one nailed (no pun intended). :tazz:

It's Baack. :tazz: This thing is relentless. The file name "agmcl.exe" from the last time around was still the same. The computer actually reboots when I tell it to now, which is good. However, start up is really, really slow. We're talking 15 minutes or so before I can do anything.

Anyway, here is my next HJT log:

Alright. Let's do a couple of things. I was going to wait until your system was clean, but we'll do it now instead.

This is your list of programs running:

Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
ewido
Zone Alarm firewall
Norton Antivirus 2005
Ad-Aware SE Plus w/ Ad-Watch
Trojan Hunter
Microsoft Antispyware

I simply can't fathom a situation where you'd need that much protection and I'd be willing to be decent money that the list of programs you have there is at least a good contributor to your startup woes.

Let's get rid of Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster and The Trojan Hunter. That will leave you with Norton Antivirus + Ewido for viruses, Ad-Aware SE + Ewido for spyware and Zone Alarm as your firewall. That's more than decent protection.

Now, let's disable Ad-Watch. That can really, really interfere with our fixes and honestly could be the reason that Nail is "hanging on". To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Now, I'm going to repost my last set of instructions. With no resident spyware scanners (i.e. running in the background... in your case Ad-Watch and MS AntiSpyware) this may do the trick this time.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

@ECHO OFF
cd\windows
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Open HijackThis
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

There will also be an item towards the bottom of the O4 section in HijackThis. In your previous log it was:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [agmcl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe

Check it. Then close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Then delete the file listed in the random O4 entry. In the above example you would delete

C:\WINDOWS\system32\agmcl.exe

Reboot

Scan the computer with Ewido one last time.
Let it do a full run, than copy the log. Past it to a blank Notepad file and save it to post here.
Than let it rerun. Save that log too.

Reboot

Post back here with a fresh log using HijackThis and both of the scan results.

Congrats, your Log is clean! :tazz:

In the future, here are some suggestions to keep your computer more secure.
Use a firewall - If you’re on a broadband connection, this shouldn’t even be an option. You can get a good, FREE firewall from ZoneLabs called ZoneAlarm here.

Make sure that you keep Windows up to date - Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to plug holes in their OS. It’s a good idea to take advantage of these as frequently as possible. As a matter of fact, if you’re lazy like me you can set Automatic Updates by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties . Then click the Automatic Updates tab, then click the Automatic radio button then click OK.

Make sure you have an up-to-date virus scanner – This is super important. Heck, it typically doesn’t even matter which one that you use… just pick one and keep it updated. A free virus scanner can be had from Grisoft, called AVG. Get it here.

You can also get a more secure browser – Not a necessity at all, but most exploits are manufactured to attack Internet Explorer. For the time being, browsers such as Opera and Firefox aren’t nearly as exploitable… yet.

Practice safe browsing – Just some run of the mill things to keep you safer. Don’t open email attachments even from people you know unless you know the attachment is coming. Try to stay to larger websites… it’s the smaller… less public ones that typically give you trouble (*this isn’t to say NEVER go there, just minimize it*). Also, try to stay legal: warez (stolen software) and file sharing apps (Kazaa, Torrents) tend to have grotesque amounts of spyware associated.

These are just some helpful tips. Enjoy malware-free computing!
