Hello,

So i was surfing the web using america online when suddenly AOL closed. My walpaper was changed to some bogus "WARNING click here to remove soyware". I tried to go to desktop properties to change my wallpaper but the background tab had disappeared as had some of the other tabs. I also began to recieve various popups (gambling, [bleep], drug sites) even with no browser open. Icons for dating services and spyware removal began to appear on my desktop and my favorites list in my browser had a large collection of sites added to it. So i ran adaware and norton and found a file intell32.exe that norton labeld as having a virus called desktop hijack. I could not delete or quaranteen the file so i ran my computer into safe mode and was able to delete it. However many of the symptons still remained including a change homepage that i am being directed to at random while using my browser. So i ran all of the scans recomended before posting this log which uncovered various other viruses as well. I was unable to update windows because i continue to get directed to a bogus page everytime i click the link. I have installed and run the hijack this program and here is log

Step 1

Configure Windows to Show all hidden files & folders and ensure you're familiar with rebooting into Safe Mode.

Download SmitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite from here.
Configure the program correctly by following the instructions here and then close the program after updating the reference files.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions here.
Otherwise, check for updates and download any new reference files before closing the program. We'll use it in Safe Mode later.


Step 2

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode - Very Important !!

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS/BROWSERS and click Fix Checked


Step 3

Open the SmitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Step 4

Open Ad-aware and do a full system scan. Remove all it finds.

Step 5

Now open Ewido Security Suite:

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, do NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

Step 6

Next go to your Control Panel and click Display | Desktop | Customise Desktop | Website | Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, and do a full system scan.
Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and Ewido Log in your next reply to THIS thread. Let me know if any problems persist.

First of all thanks so much for your time on this it is really helping.
I followed all the steps and it seems to have fixed most of the problems.

a few things:
first i was unable to find two of the entries on the hijackthis log when i ran it again:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

and

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

niether of these came up so i could not remove/fix them.

also while running the SmitRem program in the dialogue box it repeatedly had messages like "access to ..... denied" and "could not find....." i dont know if this is normal or if it represents a problem.

Finally I could not figure out how to install and have a shortcut for the Panda ActiveScan program. SO i tried to run it from that scan now button on the link. After downloading the software the program would prompt me to scan and then freeze. So I could not run this scan.

finally while running ewido it found a file that it said was part of an archive and then asked me if i wanted to delete the whole archive which i did. I'm not sure if this was correct or not

Aside from these problem it seems, for now at least, that my system is healthy. I will also attach my new log files below. thank you

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE run your anti virus, when you get the all clear
restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-

click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.

this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the nasties reinstalled again.

Then

Go to TOOLS\INTERNET OPTIONS. and delete all TEMP INTERNET FILES

Download CCLEANER


then run the scan under the windows tab.


then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.
