I am a rookie computer user and now I am having problems with a pop up called WinFixer. It has taken the better part of the day to do all the steps required in "You must do this before posting a hijack this log" but they are done (again, this is huge for me because of my inexperience)
How can I stop WinFixer? When I open internet explorer it pops up every minute or so; when I open Mozilla/Firefox it pops up AND closes all other internet pages. I did everything your page recommends (clean up;ad-aware;cw shredder;spybot;edwido;Windows sp1a; rebooted) now I am at the HiJack this log which is as follows:
HeLp! PlEaSe!!!!

You may have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
  • One
    Two
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
Then post a HijackThis log (not attach) together with the log of the L2Mfix

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I don't think the scan was done b4 you did that. It shows in your HiJackthis that it was still running.

Run option 2 one more time, it looks like its gone, but I want to make sure.

Thanks,

:tazz:

I redid l2mfix option 2 and same thing...I posted the log and the latest hijack this. I have a new level of concern...when I open Internet Explorer I am not getting the pop up from WinFix as of now...HOWEVER, when I open Mozilla Firefox (which is what I really want to use) not only do I get the pop up but I also am unable to go anywhere else--it controls my system and does not allow access to another website;what can I do?

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

open HiJackthis and do a scan. Check off the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0802] "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GH0123MN\WFI[1].exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0803] "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GH0123MN\WFXScan[1].exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [second] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\l2mfix\second.bat
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe

Click FIX CHECKED then close HJT

Please run Killbox.
  • Select "Delete on Reboot".
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GH0123MN\WFXScan[1].exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GH0123MN\WFXScan[1].exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..
  • Let the system reboot.
Run Cleanup!

Reboot into normal mode and ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

I'm sorry to ask this but what does "unzip" it to the desktop mean?

When you download it to your desktop and double click it, you should have the option of Extracting the contents. Thats the same thing as unzipping. You want to get the killbox.exe to your desktop.

hope that helps.

Open the l2mfolder again, doubleclick l2mfix.bat and choose #4 for Merge Winlogon Notify defaults

Then..

Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I followed the last steps; rebooted; ran a new hijack this; logged on...sportresults.com, imigration help, and error detected winfixer all came up as a first response.
Here are my latest logs:

Hi Amateur Geek,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it.
Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

reboot into regular mode

Silent Runners:
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here
Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post back the active scan log, ewido.txt log and the silent runners log.

Thanks,

:tazz:
