It just confirms it's not an external application causing the crash..

Let's try this..

1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
• Shdocvw.dll
• Msjava.dll
• Actxprxy.dll
• Oleaut32.dll
• Mshtml.dll
• Browseui.dll
• Shell32.dll

Open HijackThis-> Click Config-> Click Misc Tools-> Click Open Hosts File Manager-> Click Open in Notepad->

Copy&Paste the entire Contents of that Notepad Page to your Next Post!

Also let me see a new HijackThis log..

Let's run a few more diagnostic tools, see if they find anything..

[*]Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Once back in normal mode,

Please download DLLCompare from here:
http://downloads.sub.../DllCompare.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Click "Run Locate.com" to scan for DLL files. When the scan is finished, click "Compare". Finally, when that is complete, click "Make a Log of What Was Found". Please post the entire contents of the logfile here for me.

Here's the winpfind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Let's try something else again..

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now for the next step, make sure you can view hidden files:

Next click on My Computer.
Go to Tools > Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types."
Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now please manually navigate to your C: drive. Scroll down and see if there is any file without an icon there. Repeat this in C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\System32. Apart from that while you are in those places report if you see anything unusual..

Boot back to normal mode and post the Aboutbuster log and report if you saw anything suspicious in C:, C:\WINDOWS, C:\WINDOWS\System32

Let's see how this goes..

Ok, this will be my last attempt in looking for malware..then we will start to concentrate on IE..

Please download RootKitRevealer from here:
http://www.sysintern...kitrevealer.zip
Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for me to see.

Also I'd like to see the values in a registry key..

Please download and install Registrar Lite. Run reglite and paste this line into the address box:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs

Click on 'Go', then highlight AboutURLs in the right pane. Click File >> Export and save the export in a convenient place. Then, locate the file, Right-click >> Edit, and paste the contents of the file here for me to see.

Ok, let's try this..

Save the following text in the box to Notepad on your desktop. Save as "All Files" and name it Fixthis.reg. Make sure there is no empty line above REGEDIT4. Then double click on Fixthis.reg and let it merge with the registry..any changes?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window_Placement"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBarLayout"=-

I think it's gone! I haven't seen about:blank at all. It seems like everything's back to normal. I'm going to keep on surfing and see if it stays this way, but I think it may actually finally be fixed

It was just a simple registry fix resetting Window Placement and Toolbar data. Which of the two did it we can't be sure, but I'm glad it's finally over. :tazz:

And all this while we were looking for malware that didn't exist... I'd still like to wait a couple days to make sure it's not coming back..then I will post a prevention speech giving you some tips on avoiding future infection..

Regards,

Armodeluxe
