[ataraxia]

Hi there, I appear to have misplaced my 'display options' from the control panel (the icon is there, but when I click it the computer thinks about it for a bit then decides to ignore my request. Same goes if I right-click the desktop, or try to open display settings from the ATI icon in the system tray. I have a sneaking suspicion that the culprit was a screen-saver I downloaded from a movie website - but am not entirely sure.

My computer has also been running very sluggish on start up for about a week (about 3.5 mins before hourglass goes away.

I regularly run Spybot and adaware, as well as running Spyware Guard and Blaster. I use NOD32 AV. I downloaded and ran Ewido, CleanUp! and CWshredder as per the guidelines. (+ Housecall)

Thanks heaps for your response, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have worked ... clicking on display properties (or right on desktop) makes the computer think for about 5 seconds than act as if nothing has happened. (I took the liberty of checking the registry, and it still only goes as far as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies, whereon the only folder in policies is Explorer)

Hi again, and thanx for you quick response! ok, now in the registry i have ...\policies\ActiveDesktop and \Explorer and \System. On reboot it has taken me back to 640x480 resolution (and restored xp default theme from windowblinds), and (cringing as he hesitates to add bad news!) my display icon in control panel has turned into an 'unknown file' icon . still thinks for a few seconds then ignores me (sentient little bugger - hehe).

I think a system restore to an earlier time might be the best choice at this point in time.


To start System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

The first time you use System Restore, there are two options on the Welcome page:
• Restore my computer to an earlier time
• Create a restore point
2. Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.

A calendar appears.
3. In the calendar, choose which Restore Point to roll your system back to.(before the display problem)
4. Click Next.

You are prompted to close all applications before completing the Restore process because the computer will restart.
5. Upon completion of the restart, a confirmation screen appears. Click OK to continue using your computer.

Once again impressed by your quick response - I have already tried the sys restore, but unfortunately I did a trendhousecall scan the other day, where it recommended that sys restore was turned off - i didn't realise that turning it off actually deleted all past restore points. So unfortunately my restore points are on the wrong side of the problem.

1 Start your computer.
2 When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
3 When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4.If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Download SmitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.


Then boot up in SAFE MODE

Open the SmitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

I'm running out of ideas.

if you have an XP disc try this :-

try running sfc \scannow


click on START\RUN and type CMD into the address bar and click OK.

At the DOS PROMPT type SFC /SCANNOW. note the space between SFC and /SCANNOW. hit enter.

Woohoo! that seems to have done it! display properties back and workin' fine!

any ideas about the slow startup? (I usually have a handfull of things turned off in msconfig, but reactivated them for the HJT scan - though I still feel that 5-6 mins is uncommonly long!). Feel free to direct me somewhere else ... thanks so much for your time
