Good afternoon. I have a client whose PC has been infected by the Winfixer issue.

According to the other posts I have read here and my own efforts, this issue is not dealt with by conventional means. I have not run HiJack This at the moment, and am wondering if I can follow the instructions in one of the other posts concerning this issue and get my clients problem cleaned up. Please advise ASAP. HEY! It's been over a week!!!!! What's the deal? I need some help and I need it fast! Here is the HiJackThis log for this problem.

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Can you please tell me if you installed this:

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Download LQfix Here
save it to your desktop, please do not use yet

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:

Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

9. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.3\UWFX5LP_0001_0803NetInstaller.exe

Use Start>search to find this:
Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.
AUNPS2.DLL

10. Double click on LQFix program u downloaded.
A doswindow will open and close again, this is normal.

11. Run the program CleanUp!

12. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Yes, the user installed Free Phone. I am not sure what she needed it for but if it needs to go to resolve the issue, that's fine with me.

I also noticed that you have two anti virus programs running on your computer. This will not give you more security, in fact it just might do the opposite. Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Yes, there are 2 at the moment. McAfee is what came with the users PC, however the subscription has expired on it. I had downloaded the AVG program when I was following the instructions in the "click here before posting a HJT log". I will have to get the client to either renew their subscription or do something else. For now, I have the McAfee portion disabled.

As to "Free Phone", I will uninstall it then. I am going to go through your above instructions. I will post back when I am finished. Thanks again.

Just a few more files to clean Up :tazz:

Open HiJackThis
Click on the configure button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
Navigate to this file - C:\1.exe
Double click on that file.
HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

Well, I think we've got it licked. The PC is running smoothly now, Winfixer is no longer activating on start up.

Of the files you told me to delete, I didn't have:

1.exe
newbot.exe
rr.exe
vvvr.exe

I had an rr3.exe file and had that removed. But everything seems to be fine at this point. It looks like moving through all of the steps in the preliminary notes seemed to have helped with the troubleshooting as well. I have installed Mozilla Firefox browser and am going to encourage the client to use that browser, but if they don't I also installed the google toolbar as well.

One last question:
What in the world is WinFixer???!! I mean obviously it is a legitimate program, but in all my tech work I have never seen anything like this, nor have I ever seen anything so difficult to remove. Where does it come from? Since I've had the clients machine for over a week now, I would like to be able to give them an explanation of the problem. I mean, I wouldn't have known what to do about it had I not stumbled upon this forum. Any info would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

Winfixer is best described as a "rogue" system cleaner. It appears it is now downloaded with infections.....ie looktome, aurora, vundo....

How they got it, I am not sure. COuld have been a number of places and or ways.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
