Welcome to GeeksToGo

You have several worms on the computer. Let's try to rid of them.

Run HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://slirsredirect.....I1d8Nknw Wm0=
R3 - URLSearchHook: AOLTBSearch Class - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: AOL Toolbar Launcher - {7C554162-8CB7-45A4-B8F4-8EA1C75885F9} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {DE9C389F-3316-41A7-809B-AA305ED9D922} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sygate Personall Firewall] Sygate32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Sygate Personall Firewall] Sygate32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sygate Personall Firewall] Sygate32.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O9 - Extra button: AOL Toolbar - {3369AF0D-62E9-4bda-8103-B4C75499B578} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
O23 - Service: WIN32 (image) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\image.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: MAPI Mail Client (MAPI) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\mapi32.exe (file missing)

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Go to Start > Run and type: cmd
In the command window that opens type these lines hitting Enter after each line:

sc stop image
sc delete image
sc stop MAPI
sc delete MAPI
exit

Reconfigure Windows 2000 to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Navigate to and delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0

Then delete these files if they exist:

C:\WINNT\image.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\mapi32.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\Sygate32.exe

Reboot back to normal mode.

Go here and make an online virus scan, let it delete whatever it can and save the results.

http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/

Then come back and post a new log along with the Panda results.

You didn't post the Panda results..didn't you save them?

I forgot a line in my instructions..after putting a check to the entries in HijackThis we have to click Fix Checked..so let's do this again..

Run HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html

O23 - Service: MAPI Mail Client (MAPI) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\mapi32.exe (file missing)

Close all other browsers and windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Click Start > Run type services.msc > OK
In the list of services find:

That log looks clean now..

Also you can fix this line if you don't want to see aol on your right click..

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar Search - res://c:\program files\aol\aol toolbar 2.0\aoltbhtml.dll/search.html

How is the computer behaving now? Any problems left? And did you run the Panda scan?

EVen though my panda scan comes up clean, I accidently overwrote the ewido scan that gave me a trojan detection........ I'm STILL having problems with random restarts and not being able to surf internet explorer... Anyways the trojan that was found was trojandownloader.small.bem... Maybe this will help me clean this pest... Ican't download, I can't surf, I can't do anything........ The panda scan keeps coming clean... It's ridiculous

Make a new scan with Ewido and post the log for me..

Copy the text in the box below to Notepad. In Notepad go to File>Save As

In the drop down box at the bottom choose "All Files", name it Fixie.reg and save it on your desktop. Then double click on Fixie.reg to merge it with the registry..next, open IE
go to Tools>Reset Web Settings..

Did that help?

If you can't use IE how were you able to perform the Panda scan? Do you have another browser installed on the computer?

Also, let me see a new HijackThis log..

Alright..... I'm convinced that this is a trojan/virus that blocks your connection. Many Many times I'll get an error message that says I can't connect because my modem or connection device was not found....... Then I try a couple more times get the message but finally I connect........... Yeah.... I just got the message a minute ago so yeah......

I can't download, can't run any update services on any programs........ Basically I'm still connected to the Internet but my connection is dead........... So it affects more than just ie............ My earthlink taskbar automatically closes for some odd reason also........

The log looks clean..

From what you're describing could be an overheating problem, did you ever check for that? Here's a page with tips on checking for overheating..

http://www.pcguide.c...x/ggen02-c.html

When you experience this does an immediate reboot make it back to normal? That's worth checking too..
