I'm trying to reinstall Win95 to upgrade to Win98. I can't get my CDROM to work. I have FDISK, FORMATted C: and when I reboot with Boot disk, I get this error message:

"CD-ROM Device Driver for IDE (Four Channels Supported)
©Copyright Oak Technology Inc. 1993-1996
Driver Version : V340
Device Name : BANANA
No drives found, aborting installation

Device driver not found: 'BANANA'.
No valid CDROM device drivers selected
A:\> "

What can I do?

Can you get in the BIOS and check if the floppy is set to be 1.44. Also check if the CD-Rom is connecting straight to the mobo or is connected to the sound card first, and if so what typo of sound card you have?

To add to HQZ's reply, is the CD-ROM recognized during boot up? You might try a boot disk from another site, which may have different drivers. Your hardware may be newer than '95 can recognize. You may need to install new chipset drivers, the default ones may not be up to par. You may need a bios upgrade.

Is this how the machine was set up before, win98 installed over win95?

To HQZ: I can't get anything. When I try to go to C: I get "Invalid Drive"

To Tyger: I had windows 95 installed, but couldn't get my CD player to work to upgrade with windows 98.

Howdy and welcome to G2G:

Are you using a Win95 bootdisk?? If so, that is your problem.. Win95 bootdisks do NOT have cd-rom drivers on them unless you got the bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

Go to www.bootdisk.com and download the file for a Win98SE or WinME bootdisk.. Once it is downloaded, place a clean newly formatted floppy in the floppy drive..

Now, double click on the file you downloaded in order to extract the proper files onto the boot floppy..

Now, try using that to boot the system and install Windows..

BTW, when given the option, select "Boot with cd-rom support" !!

To Murray S.: I thought for sure that would work. I followed your instructions and rebooted my system. Unfortunately, I'm still receiving the same error. That didn't seem to change a thing. I have checked the bios. It is set for Diskette 1.44. The CD-ROM is set to Master.

The CD-ROM is Sony Model #CDU701; Serial #7025819

Any other suggestions?

Is the cd-rom on its own IDE cable?? If it is, i should be connected to the END connector on the cable !!

If it is on the same IDE cable as your hard-drive, then it should be jumpered as slave and connected to the middle connector..

It is on it's own and connected to the end.

I did something different. I don't know if it helped. I installed a driver specific to this CDROM. I'm now getting this error at reboot:

Sony ATAPI CDROM Device Driver, Version 2.27.b
Copyright © Sony Corporation, 1994-1996. All Rights Reserved

NO DRIVES ARE ATTACHED, OR DRIVES ARE PWERED DOWN.
THE DEVICE DRIVER IS NOT INSTALLED.

Do I need to install oakcdrom.sys?

Okay. This is what I get now when I reboot the system:

This driver is provided by Oak Technology, Inc...
0TI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM device driver, Rev D91XV352
© Copyright OakTechnology Inc. 1987-1997
Device Name: ATAPI_CD
No drives found, aborting installation

c:\>Path=C:\Windows;c:\Windows\command

c:\>c:\Windows\command\mscdex.exe /d:oakcdrom.sys /L:R
Illegal option
usage: MSCDEX [/E /K /S /V] [/D:<driver> ... [/L:<letter>] [/M:<buffers>]

C:\>

What now? The power is connected. I see the CDROM light come on and hear it spin when booted.

Okay.. Going to get you to reformat the system again.. Is the Win98 cd you have an upgrade cd or a full install cd??

Lastly, how old is the system you are working on here??

I only have the Windows 98 upgrade. The system I have is pretty old. It's a Dell GX-1 350Mhz

I reformatted and now I'm back to where I started. Same error message from the beginning

Okay. I wanted to post this in case someone else is having the same problem. I googled everything and couldn't find a solution. I finally figured it out on my own.
I had a duplicate machine, so I reviewed the "Setup" (F2) at boot. I changed the the Secondary drives to read:
Drive 0: Auto
Drive 1: None

Page 2:
Changed boot Sequence to: CD-ROM First

I rebooted system, went back in to "Setup" (F2)
This time the computer recognized the CD-Rom drive and the Secondary drive now looked like this:

Drive 0: Auto CD-ROM Drive

I then loaded a boot disk for Windows 95
Was prompted to select from three options
1. Boot with CD-Rom Support
2. Boot without CD-Rom support
3. Help

I selected #2 and allowed system to go through it's sequence.
At the a:\> prompt, I did the following:

a:\>SYS C: (Received System Transferred)
a:\>Format c: /s

After Format I rebooted system with Windows 95 boot disk in floppy drive. Then I chose option 1 this time.
At the a:\>I changed to the C: Drive
At the c:\>Setup
and off I went. Everything loaded correctly. Then I upgraded to Windows 98.

Thank everyone for your help. I hope this information is able to help others.
