Civilization III multiplayer Problems

I have Civ III complete and whenever I try to launch a multiplayer game or, when a game I'm part of tries to launch, my game goes back to the main menu and freezes. I don't think it's a firewall issue, but I'm not really sure how to check. If I'm able to connect to the games server to join a game, then why aren't I able to play a game?

I run XP, with Pentium 4.

Any help, ideas, suggestions, or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
