I am buying a new computer, and I can either choose a computer with 1 GB DDR SDRAM or 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM. Everything else is the same, even the price. The salesperson told me that that 512 MB DDR2 works as well as the 1 GB DDR if not better or they're equivalent or something like that.

I'm not sure about that though. Well, i'm not a computer expert.

So my question is, is it better to get a 1 GB DDR or a 512 MB DDR2?

I've read reviews on DDR and DDR2, but i'm not sure if their tests are with 1 GB DDR and 1 GB DDR2 or 1 GB DDR and 512 MB DDR2.

If everything else is the same then personally I would go with DDR2.

This is the latest technology, why start with something that you know is already going to be replaced? Once you get one with DDR you cant put DDR2 in later.

Regarding speed - I don't know if it will be slower or the same but I would still get DDR2 anyway, as you can always upgrade the RAM later if you need to. One of the easiest things to do yourself. Plus, I am sure that it will only get cheaper.

From what i have read there is no clear advantage from the DDR2 modules over the latest in low lateny DDR modules in fact when you are gaming the DDR wins , this is the reason it hasnt been adopted by AMD it may be that they are waiting for the next memory type which is not far of. If you have an intel board and chip you should get the DDR2 because they seem to operate slightly better with it. But DDR2 is going to be replaced soon anyway.

How soon is soon? I have been looking to buy a notebook and most of them still have DDR... only some have DDR2.

I guess notebooks always lag behind.
