Hey guys, i'm new to your community but i have a bit of a problem on my machine.

There was a thread about this before, and i followed everything on it but i think the problem is unique to my computer... the problem still re-occurs. i guess it depends on what parts of my computer are being affected and i'm not sure what areas in my HJT log are messed up.

First i'm gonna describe the problem, then i'll give you my HJT log, and see if you guys can crack this case ;)

Where to start? :tazz:
Ok, how i acquired this malware/trojan, i'm unsure of, but it is very, very malicious. First and foremost, it spits out a random executable into my "Temp" folder that is in the "Local Settings" folder, which is located in my "Documents and Settings" under my current W-XP name "Minoru" The pathfile would read:
"C:\Documents And Settings\Minoru\Local Settings\Temp". Then after putting those files into Temp, there are short-cuts placed on my desktop, and in my documents for them, also on my start-bar with an "Installed" message tagged to it as if it were a program.

This is where it gets tricky: There has to be a file installed somewhere on my computer that is spitting this random executable/trojans out. It renames each one by numbers. For instance: "19024.exe" - "24350.exe." - "42304.exe" And so on and so fourth.

So now I know that it replicates itself and runs more than one instance of itself at a time. Ultimately causing internet pop-ups and what i think are "Installation Requests" i can't know for sure though, because most of the wording is in Spanish.

here's my HJT log:

Well guys, i've spent alot of hours trying to destroy this thing, but it keeps coming back. It will run multiple instances of itself (A attempted Installer) And destroy CPU Usage, usually lagging the computer pretty bad. The pop-ups it produces are targetted at "http://www.new-access.biz". And i've seen itself call it self "Private Internet Zone" on the Installer title.

All help is appreciated, and i thank you for taking the time to help me.

Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo!

Please open HijackThis and scan for a log (not save..scan only). Place a check next to the following entry:

O2 - BHO: CInterfaceObj Object - {58F07DD3-924D-4141-BC74-299F523A95F1} - C:\WINDOWS\pxwma.dll

Be sure all other programs and windows are closed (including this one) and click the "Fix Selected" button.

Please reboot into Safe mode, and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\pxwma.dll

Reboot normally.

Please download CleanUp! and run it to remove any leftover remnants of infection. Click the CleanUp button, and let it scan and select any files it needs to remove. Once it is done, exit the program.

Go to Panda ActiveScan and do a full system scan. Be sure to choose the "Autoclean" option, and DO save the logfile.

Please make a post back here with a copy of the ActiveScan log, along with a fresh HijackThis log. :tazz:

ok let's get rid of the IST infection. I understand you probably like the weather program, but when we've got you clean I can give you safer ones to use.
Please open HJT and scan, check this box only:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe

Close everything else, and click "Fix Selected".

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as the machine begins to reboot.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add and Remove programs and uninstall Daily Weather Forecast

Find this folder and delete it:
C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast

Reboot normally

I'm not seeing anything else in your log that is causing the random files, so let's look deeper.

Please download SilentRunners from the following link:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
  • Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on SilentRunners.vbs
  • You may get a warning message about scripts, allow this script to run.
  • When the scan has finished, you will get a pop up message.
  • A log file will be created on your desktop.
  • Post the entire contents of the log file in your next post.
Post me the Silent Runners log, along with a new HJT log please.

1. Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

2. Open Ewido and manually update it to be sure you have the latest definitions.

3. Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key on startup.

4. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

5. Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

6. Reboot into normal mode, and run the CleanUp! program again that we previously installed.

7. Make a reply here with a copy of the log from Ewido, the log from the SmitRem tool, and a fresh HijackThis log please..and let me know how things are running! :tazz:

Great!! :tazz: I'm glad everything is working well now. I'll leave this open for a few days in case you have troubles again. I will be away out of town from early tomorrow morning, until Sunday afternoon. So if you post in between then...I'll get to you when I get back on Sunday!

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! ;)

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:
Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
