Hello all.

I am working in Windows 2000. I received a message that my wininet.dll is infected with Alemod.e virus. I have run McAfee, Spybot, Ad-aware, Microsoft Spyware, CSShredder, Stinger, etc. but cannot remove this from my computer. I have read the posts about windows XP, but I am unsure if the help posted will apply to W2K.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Brent

Addendum1 10:45am

I am downloading Trojanhunter and Hijackthis now. I am on dialup so it will take a while. I will run these and post as required.

Brent

Hi la32301 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you :tazz:

If you use Windows XP, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Go to start> search for this file:
Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

avpx32.dll

right click on it and choose compress and email

Please email that file to :

In the subject, put the name of the file

Right click on the Microsoft/Giant AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it after the fix, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

:) Let me reprase my former reply:

I just received the virus:

"The file C:\WINNT\system32\WININET.dll is infected by the W32/Alemod.e.dll virus and cannot be cleaned."

I try to delete it and it tells me it cannot and to run the rescue disk from McAfee. When I run this at start up, it runs for a period then I get a list of the number "5" with progra~ interspersed and flashing red box in the background. I cannot read what is in the box because of the numbers. when I press escape the computer reboots. I have tried this before allowing the computer to run overnight and the only thing I see when return are the numbers and the flashing box.

Please do not try to fix anything your self. I am not saying that your not capable, but it could mess up something I am trying to fix as somethings you have to do in a certain order.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINNT\switchagreement.txt

5. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

6. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

7. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

8. Run the program CleanUp!

9. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

10. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Silent Runners:
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here

You have a difficult infection remaining and I am trying to get the best way to tackle it, so please be patient :)

Create a Startup List:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notebook onto your post

Thanks,

Excal,
Although I do not know your title(Mr., Mrs., Ms.), I wish to thank you for everything that you have done for me. As a good Southerner, I always address people by their 'Sir' name. But I humbly thank you for your efforts to help me in this situation. Here is my post:
