Hi again....This my second post for the same problem. My first post included a HJT log but I had alot of things disabled in the startup. This log was made with all things enabled in the startup.

After a lightning storm 3 weeks ago my computer went down and I have finally replaced the mother board and modem and am back on the Web. Now I find that the browser acts like it has a virus. It loads pages and downloads very slow now. Could be a modem issue but it dials up and logs on fine, just to immediately browse and load slow. I ran all the spyware and malware and virus killers as suggested on the first help page. They found alot of suff....but slow browser persists. He is my last HJT log. Thankyou very much.

Hi toader32

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

You have the Peper trojan.
Download the Peperfix Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Make sure you are connected to the Internet and run it; reboot afterwards. Repeat the procedure as it has to be run twice to ensure its effectiveness.
When you have completed this continue with the fix.

Go to Control Panel Add remove programs uninstall the following:
C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer
C:\Program Files\ClearSearch
C:\Program Files\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker
C:\PROGRAM FILES\BLSEARCH
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
C:\Program Files\Bargain Buddy
C:\Program Files\Power Scan
C:\Program Files\Orbit

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:

Hi again.

First I would like to thank "thatman" for responding to my post. He advised me to load and run the peperfix virus remover, reboot and run it again. Nothing was found. As advised I removed several items in my HJT log and also delete some files in the Windows system directory. Finally he advised me to run the Panda online virus checker. Panda wanted to down load the ActiveX file....8meg. My browser is so slow that it would have take 15 hours. I guess I dont have the ActiveX. I did run an old downloaded version of Pandas Titanium virus checker off line....it found nothing. Slow browser still exists.

As a recap of my situation....I just installed a new mother board and modem in my computer after a lightning storm took them out. Computer runs fine now....I installed the new CNR modem and what I believe it the correct drivers. It dials up and logs on fine....just to go into a very slow browse. It takes 5 minutes or more to go to my Yahoo mail and read. I have a very slow connection when all is working normal here at my location 24k. So with this problem browsing is quite slow. But I know when things are right and things are slow. I dont think the new modem has a problem.....but I am beginning to wunder. The 2 little lights in the lower right of task bar blink....then stop....then blink... then stop and so on.

Thats all I know . Here is my latest HJT log after doing some cleanup.

Thankyou very much

Hi toader32

PCtel HSP56 MicroModem
Country selection for a PCtel HSP56 based modem. Often found in OEM (Dell,Compaq, HP, etc) systems for their modems included on the motherboard or as a separate card. Once you\'ve set the modem up to the chosen country it\'s not required.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CountrySelection] pctptt.exe<--= PCtel HSP56 MicroModem

Did you uninstall all the old modem drivers?

Hi Thatman

I finally figured out exactly how to stay in this topic and reply. Thank you for your response. I am not sure if I removed all other drivers. I actually thought the new modem would just run like the old one....but I guess it didnt and thats why I went out on the web looking for a new driver. I dont even know if it is the correct driver. I bought this modem on ebay ,..it was advertised as new with driver CD. It didnt come with the driver CD and seller was no help.

I dont understand exactly what you mean about the country selection. I will be playing with the drivers again after this post. Also I am including a new HJT log since I had alot of things disabled in the startup during the last HJT post.

I am starting to think it is a modem issue but I just dont know. I did not have a slow browser prior to this incident with the mother board and new modem.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Thankyou very much for your time.

Hi toader32

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Advanced Message Server] rundll32.exe ams490.dat,Execute
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mapisvc32] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAPISVC32.exe
O9 - Extra button: Free History Cleaner - {ECC5778A-6E88-BFCE-13CE-81F134789E7B} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\FREE HISTORY CLEANER\FREEHISTORYCLEANER (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Free History Cleaner - {ECC5778A-6E88-BFCE-13CE-81F134789E7B} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\FREE HISTORY CLEANER\FREEHISTORYCLEANER (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAPISVC32.exe

Let the system Reboot as normal.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.trendmicr...m/spyware-scan/

Post a new HJT.log.

Hi toader32

Download this scanner - cureit.
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Run drweb - cureit
Doubleclick the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open , asking "start the express scan now".
It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it find, and when it says "done" in the lower left corner click on all your drive's.
A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the pedestrian who now has turned green
Click on the green man in the right corner, it will scan All your drive's, say yes to all

Post a new Hjt.log when done.

Hi Thatman,

I ran the Drweb cureit and it found 2 things. msbb321.dll.tcf and another file in a pinball game I never use called BlackKnight. they were both deleted. I rebooted again with all items enabled in the startup and ran the HJT. The log is attached.

Then I went browsing to see if things had changed. Browsing was still slow. Then I remembered I had all the items enabled in the startup, ( I normally do not have all these enabled). I rebooted with all items disabled in the startup. When I went on line there was a marked improvement in browsing speed. Almost normal in most cases. A few times while browsing eBay listings the page would load half way and then gave me the Could Not load page Cannot find server or DNS Error. If I brought up a new browser or waited a while and tried again it would load the page. I have never seen that before. Anyway...I browsed almost like normal for over an hour. I shut down and came back later after a couple hours. When I went on line......it browses slow again. Dang I thought we had it. I ran most of the scanners you advised in earlier replies and they found nothing. Here is the last HJT log.

BTW Should I be set for a proxy server? I dont know what that is.

Thanks for hanging in there

Hi toader32

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = localhost:6502
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.

Hi Thatman,

I did all you advised and still slow.
The scan found 3 peer to peer items and removed them.

I am including a new HJT log and I have a concern about one line in it.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] C:\PROGRAM FILES\EARTHLINK 5.0\CONMGR.EXE

This file does not exist on my computer and I dont have anything to do with earthlink....as far as I know.. SHould I delete it?

Thanks for all your help.....I know you helped cleanup junk that had been hiding for years.

Hi toader32

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Go to start/run/ type "msconfig" without the quotes/click startup and uncheck the box for this entry/then click ok
KB891711.EXE <-- This is knowen to slow 95, 95, Me down

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] C:\PROGRAM FILES\EARTHLINK 5.0\CONMGR.EXE
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\EARTHLINK 5.0\CONMGR.EXE
Exit Explorer

Hi Thatman,

I disabled the KB8917 .....I disable all items in the startup when I go online. I only enable these items for the HJT log. When all the items are enabled...my resources are 73% after boot up....When all items are disbled my resources are 98% after boot.

I removed the line you advised in the HJT log. Browsing still slow.

Somewhere along the line this week all my .jpg icons turned into .zip icons. I found a program on the web called TweakUI that fixed that. You should see that in the new log. Was this the result of removing something?

Anyway here is the new log.

Thanks for you time.

Hi Thatman,

Here is the results of the testing.

Only red flag i see was Check IE restricted sites zone. Wanted me to disable all ActiveX and scripting. I am set to default medium and all activex is disabled.

Let me know whatelse you would like to do.
Some times pages seem to load fairly normal.....then others dont and grind to a halt.

Thanks for you time

Running ProgramsMalicious or poorly written running programs are a common cause of poor performance and system instability. We strongly recommend that you use an antivirus program such as EZ Antivirus from Computer Associates and a spyware scanner such as PestPatrol on a regular basis. To get control over your running programs we suggest WinTasks 5 Pro. Click on a file name to see more information about it.

Improve your Internet Connection!
PC Pitstop Optimize can give you a big speed boost. Check it out! The Bandwidth tests measure the Internet bandwidth between your computer and PC Pitstop's servers. In general, if your bandwidth result is at least 85% of the rated connection speed, you're receiving good throughput (though shared connections may affect this, too).

Average Ping measures the round-trip time for a packet to travel from the PC being tested to PC Pitstop's web site and back; lower numbers indicate better performance. Ping times under 150ms are typical of T1, DSL, or cable modems. Consistent ping times of more than 500ms should only be seen in connections that span continents (e.g., USA to Europe) and/or are linked by satellite. Ping losses usually indicate serious Internet congestion.

Internet performance can be erratic for many different reasons, so you can't expect to get maximum bandwidth and ping performance every time you test. You should test several times and at different times of the day to get the most accurate picture of your connection speed. For additional testing of your browser configuration and Internet connection, we recommend BrowserTune.

Memory Tip
On virtually any system, memory is the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade, especially if you currently have 256MB or less. Installing memory is a snap, it just works and your PC is faster. PC World has put together a step-by-step guide if you need help.
With prices so low lately I've purchased a lot of memory, and all of it has been from Crucial. Their prices beat the competition and they currently have free shipping.
-- Rob Cheng, CEO, PC PitstopSpeed rating is measured in megabytes per second. The percentage indicates the performance of this system compared to systems in our database with a similar CPU and clock speed; the number of similar systems is also shown. For example, a score of 50% would indicate this system had half the performance of comparable systems; 200% would indicate twice the performance. A "normal" number is 100% plus or minus about 15%.

The System Management BIOS is reporting that there is 256 MB of RAM, but Windows reports that 224 MB is available. The most common reason for this discrepancy is that your system uses some system RAM for the video graphics card or BIOS functions. This case is common in highly-integrated PCs with video graphics built into the system board, and does not require any changes on your part.

Drive LettersThese are drive letters associated with hard disk drives. This list does not include drive letters for floppy disks or other removable media such as CD-ROM, DVD, Zip or Jaz drives.

Description Drive C
Partition format FAT32
Cluster size 32 KB
Drive label No Label
Size 38160 MB
Free space 16357 MB (43%)
Junk files 26 MB (0%)
Data fragmentation 3%
File fragmentation 1%
Uncached speed 15 MB/s (58%)

Percentages shown for free space and junk files (temporary files, browser cache, Recycle Bin files) represent the size relative to the total disk capacity. A disk with 50% free space is half-full (or half-empty, if you're an optimist). PC Pitstop Optimize is an easy way to keep your hard disk free of unnecessary files.

Our full tests only perform disk health checking on the C drive. We recommend that you check the health of your other drives using our Disk Health page.
Data fragmentation measures the percentage of data on the disk that is contained in fragmented files. File fragmentation is the percentage of files on the disk that are fragmented. Some disk optimization programs such as Win98 Disk Defragmenter intentionally fragment files to place them in the best position to ensure quick program loading, so the fragmentation measures may be non-zero even after running a disk optimizer. For more details see our Disk Health page.

Cached and uncached speed is measured in megabytes per second (MB/s). When a percentage is shown for cached and uncached speed, it compares the performance of the drive with those of systems in our database with the same processor and clock speed. (Our database currently has 4222 similar systems.) A rating of 200% means a disk is twice the performance of similar systems, 50% means it's half the performance. Cached disk speed generally measures the efficiency of the system's processor and memory system, not the performance of the hard disk. Uncached speed is most affected by the physical hard disk and the disk interface.

PC Pitstop's video performance performs a basic test of your system's graphics capabilities and reports the result in millions of pixels displayed per second (MP/s). The percentage indicates the performance of this system compared to systems in our database with a similar CPU, clock speed, and video board. For example, a score of 50% would indicate this system had half the performance of comparable systems; 200% would indicate twice the performance. Determining "normal" performance can be difficult, there can be wide differences due to video drivers even on the same video board.
