can't log into yahoo messenger

when i try to log into yahoo messenger, my yahoo box pops up, but my little smiley guy doesn't turn yellow and smile. he just stays grey and frowns. and i tried to reinstall it, and i keep getting a messege that says either i don't have an internet connection, or my proxy server is invalid. if you have any ideas, please let me know. i hate it when computers mess up, i don't know anything about fixing them. any help would greatly be appreciated.
