i have a BT Yahoo! broadband cd that came with the modem. i thought i had tried reinstaling it, but maybe i didn't do it properly. whats next for me to do?

Good, first uninstall your BT modem.
You will need to reboot, then bing up your symantec window and in the options look for the option for Symantec to run on startup. Disable this so it doesnt. Do the same for your firewall program and make sure that also will not run at startup.
Next step insert your BT modem CD and follow the promts to install. You will be asked to reboot so do so and when you do, the installation will be complete.

If the CD runs it's test let it, but when done disconnect immediately from the internet! You need to set up your security again so... You can now go back to your Anti Virus and Firewall settings and enable them again to run when you start your pc.

After that you can reconnect to the internet. Let me know how you get on
