Hi Sam - thanks for getting back with me. My PC has been having some bad behavior lately. I've had to boot up in safe mode quite often the last week and when I connect to the internet I often get a message saying page not found --- for all pages, for the past 6 months. I can correct this most of the time by running 'netsh winsock reset catalog' at a DOS prompt and rebooting. This is becoming a real pain.
I have a current subscription to McAfee's virus scanner, I run SpyBot and Ad-Aware at least one a week too. Any suggestions?

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Hi Buckeye (I LOVE your name - I'm a graduate of Ohio State),

Well I did what you suggested Friday night, however I've been unable to use my modem since Saturday (I'm at work, shhhh). It seems I suddenly have a software com port conflict which is interesting because I don't have anything else that uses the modem nor did I install any new software this weekend. Everything on my task manager appears normal and I can account for all of it. I reinstalled my modem, an internal that came with my Dell, and that didn't do much. I have noticed in the device manager that it only shows COM01 and LPT listed as ports and the modem used COM03. Tonight I will attemt to log in in safe mode and remove the ports and then boot up normally to allow them to reset themselves. I hope this is the right thing to do. I'll look for another post from you whith wise words of wisdom before I head home from work today. This is very frustrating and I don't know if it is an extension of my previous issues or not.

There wasn't a lot of malware showing up in your log, in fact your second log looked pretty clean to me. Usually Winsock Fix will repair a connection that has been corrupted due to malware, so I'm inclined to believe that you may have another issue. It sounds like you are on the right track though.

You may want to check with your ISP also.

I re-installed the modem last night, deleted the COM port in safe mode, etc. After running through the troubleshooting options I ran Dell's Modem Helper again. It detects a dial tone coming into the modem however the modem cannot hear it. Do you suppose that the storms this weekend could have fried my modem? Does this happen? I did hear lightening strike pretty close - close enough to make me jump.

Who is your ISP? Do you have a disc from your ISP where you can reinstall their software?

It's CopperNet but my ISP isn't the problem. The modem isn't dialing out. Diagnostics show that there is a dial tone but the modem can't hear it. That's why I think the storms this weekend may have fried the modem. There was a lightening strike very close by my house -- within 100 yards.

You are probably right about the modem. Fortunately they are inexpensive and very easy to replace.
