Hey everyone,

I got an ancient machine here which doesn't have the option in BIOS to boot from CD, so I've loaded up Win98SE boot disk - would it be possible to boot it from the command line on the win98se bootdisk?

If so, what would the command be?

I'm trying to install Unbuntu, not live.

No that's not possible.

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but have you tried updating your bios?

The system is so old I doubt the manufacturer even supports the board any more

Its running Cyrix processor, and very ancient AT board.

I tried using the tutorial on how to install from HDD through boot.ini - How ever this is non-existant in Windows 98 ? I made the file boot.ini but it gets ignored and just boots to Windows 98

Where is the win98 boot file?

Win 98 uses Dos autoexec function for its boot process. honestly I'm not even sure if your system will work for Ubuntu.

this is how Ubuntu Wiki suggests installing if you don't have a bootable cd rom.

Most of the systems they have it installed on are P4, a couple of P3, and one P2.

I assume you are interested in the GUI that ubuntu offers. Otherwise I'm sure you can find a command line Linux distro that will fit your machine.
