Welcome to Geeks to Go!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Close HiJackThis.

Then, download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, if it does go ahead and reboot.

After that's done, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Okay, this is weird. ActiveScan said that my comp doesn't meet its specifications. And all the specs check out...does it not recognize IE because I have FireFox as my default browser or something? BTW, I haven't had any more problems since running HijackThis and L2mfix yesterday.
EDIT: N/m...I figured it out...

I still see some adware, so we're not quite done.

Copy everything inside the code box below and paste into Notepad. Go up to "File > Save As", then click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfiles.bat on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\??rvices.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfiles.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will produce a notepad. I need you to copy everything in that notepad and paste it here.

Right-click the Start button and go to "explore" to get into Windows Explorer.

Set your system to SHOW HIDDEN FILES

Go into the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

There will be 2 similar looking files (they may have the same name...)

Look for these:

services.exe <-this is the legitimate one, if you right-click and go to properties it will have a Microsoft signature and created 08/04/2004 with a size of 108,032.

??rvices.exe <-may be the same name as the legitimate one or it may actually have questionmarks (or other weird characters) in the name. If you right-click and go to properties there will be no microsoft signature and created 8/08/05 and 401,408 in size. This is the one you need to delete!

After it has been deleted, please run the following program:

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
  • Install it.
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Post a new HiJackThis log as well.

I couldn't find the second file... THere's only one with services.exe name and none with a name similar except services.msc and it doesn't match the properties you mentioned. there's no ??rvices.exe or anything like that either.

Did you set your system to show hidden files and go into Windows Explorer as opposed to search?

That file is there otherwise findfiles.bat would not have shown it.

Look in the system32 folder for any file that has 2 characters then ends in "rvices.exe" with a size of 401408 created 8/8/05, this needs to be deleted.

services.msc is legitimate as well as the microsoft signed services.exe

I did everything you told me to, checked every .exe file in the system32 folder, ran findfiles.bat again to make sure it was still supposed to be there, searched again and still nothing. I made double sure that it was displaying hidden files. I have no clue why I can't find this unless I have overlooked it on four ocassions.

Go to Start > Run, type cmd click OK.

Paste the following line into the window:

del /q c:\windows\system32\??rvices.exe

Hit enter. Type exit hit enter.

Then reboot, and run FindFiles.bat again to make sure it's gone, then run SpySweeper.
