Installing a New Hard Drive

This is a very stupid and basic question however I have never done it before.
How do I install it? I have on that I want to use as a dual boot system runnign with Linux and Windows (Linux being installed on the new harddrive). I connected the ribbon cable and the power supply but it came up with insert system disk, or system boot disk.

Anyone help me?
